Bracket : Using Stacks

Principle and interest

Autopano uses a shooting bracket and keeps the specifics, which means that it perfectly superimposes the different exposures of the same image to be assembled to obtain the panoramas corresponding to the respective shooting exposures (the principle is the same for focus bracketing or openness bracketing). This is obviously very interesting for assembling bracketed images. The bracketed panoramas can be mixed as you wish (by using Photoshop masks, etc.).

In practice

Creation of stacks

  • An automatic bracket shooting (automatic mode, shutter priority)is detected by Autopano, a pile is then automatically created.
Note: according to the make and model of camera it is possible that this process does not work.

  • When a manual bracket shooting is not detected by Autopano, the stacks needs to be manually created:
By opening the images in Autopano (6 images here), the created group contains the images classed according to their name. It is clearly visible here that the 3 first images are the same image with different exposures... ... A right-click in the images' display area opens the contextual menu. Use Create stack by N lets you group these group images based on the specified number (in this case 3)... ... After having confirmed the creation of the stack, here is the obtained result:

Propagation of stacks

This is used after the creation of the group up to the final rendering (confirmation steps not included), and is summarized in 3 main points:

1 - Group of bracketed images
Here, 12 images are grouped into 4 stacks of 3 images: A stack represents the same image and the small symbol Symbole Pile represents the exposure number that makes up the stack.
2 - Layer editor
The logic behind the use of input piles is to obtain 3 layers of 4 images or in other words, 3 panoramas of 4 images that are perfectly superimposed: A layer corresponds to an exposure and thus contains 4 images.
3 - Final result
Everything is perfectly superimposed and organized in layers in a single Photoshop file:

How do I proceed?

2 steps are needed to set-up the propogation of the stacks according to the 3 points shown above:

  • Pass from a group of images to the layer editor.
  • Pass from the layer editor to the final result.

From the group of bracketed images to the layer editor

Once the group of bracketed images is created, open the Group settings and click on Icône Paramètres du groupe... ... Select the Panorama tab and define a group of stacked images in the Panorama layer frame.
Confirm and launch the detection...
... Then open the panorama editor. You can see the corrisponding result (layer editor) :

From the layer editor to the final result

Open the Rendering settings in the panorama editor (where the layer editor is found) open them and click on Icône Rendre le panorama... ... Configure the settings as follows (the Output frame defines the make up of the final file):
Confirm, the rendering launches...
... The final result, when you open a file in Photoshop, corresponds well with the pattern found in the Outputframe of the rendering settings:
