Hi Eric, The .fast (and .tagged with AVP 2.5) are temporary files. They are usually created after the render and ultimatly replace the .mp4. If you still have these files after the render, that can be a sign of permissions problem on your thunderbold external drive.
When you click "render" for the first time on a project, there is a definition already set. It's the number of pixels your project can render without upscaling the scene. Sure you can go up to 16k, but yes you'll have insane file size without any quality gain.
