Autopano Video - Template Stitching Study
When using a GoRig, you are not at the nodal point and this is a critical problem when trying to stitch the videos together.
We think it is reasonable that for each GoPro rig, we can create a template that highlights the rig layout.
In practice, it is not really the case and here's the study that highlighted this fact.
STUDY WORK FLOW
In the following room, we did use a GoPro based rig in 2 setups.
|Setup 1 - straight||Setup 2 - at 45°|
We did create 2 reference templates, one for setup 1 and one for setup 2. You can see the quality of the template created with source videos.
Differences between 2 templates should be low as it is the same rig, exactly, we just changed the orientation.
So we should be able to render videos reccorded with second setup with first setup template and reverse. It should work. In fact, it doesn't work at all as we have parallax.
Now, if we use the template from setup 1 on the video from setup 2 ( we need to make a 45° rotation to get the horizon back ).
Template stitching can work but if the content is changing too much and if the content have straights lines, then some issues will happen for sure. The parallax you have with the gopro is in fact taken into account when you create a template. And if you apply that template to another content, you cannot be sure it will work as is. Automatic detection should be always preferred.
