Autopano Video - Acquisition and preparation of the videos 200

This is the first tutorial of the whole 360 video process : the capture and the preparation of the videos with a view to stitch them.
It's applicated to the most common 360 video hardware : the GoPro rigs or any rig that allows to put cameras together.

Acquisition of the videos

Conditions

In any case you have to make sure that the following conditions are followed:

  • The overlay between the videos must be sufficient. In the case of 360 Rigs involving 6 GoPro, see the array below about usable modes depending on your RIG
  • The parallax must be minimal. In photography, it is possible to set the nodal point with the use of 3D tripod heads. The bulky size of video cameras does not allow this, but it is important to minimize it as much as you can. This is why the 360° Rigs are the most compact possible.
  • The video format size can vary, but their framerate must be identical.


If you use Rigs offered by Kolor, make sure each GoPro are set with an identical framerate and you will have met all the conditions necessary for the
stitching
.


Usable modes with the GoPro

Icon attention.png You have to make sure that you have enough overlap between all your cameras, if you don't you will not be able to stitch your videos. Here are the required settings for GoPro based rigs:

Shooting

Try as far as possible to keep your interesting content outside of the overlapping areas, the results will be better.


Synchronization

In many cases you will need to synchronize your input files, there are different ways to do that:

  • audio sync.: make a "clap" when all the cameras are recording
  • visual sync. using a flash (manual): put all the recording cameras in a small closed space (a small room, a plastic bag) and flash them.
  • motion sync.: turn the rig around his center, not too fast, holding it with a pole, a tripod or at arm's length :

Preparation of the video files

File organization

There are two different ways to copy your files to your computer:

All the videos you want to stitch together have to be in the same folder. Here is an example of a good organization:

If you have multiple sequences, make one folder by sequence:

  • SEQUENCE_01
    • CAM_1.mp4
    • CAM_2.mp4
    • CAM_3.mp4
    • ...
  • SEQUENCE_02
    • CAM_1.mp4
    • CAM_2.mp4
    • CAM_3.mp4
    • ...

Try to keep the video names consistent (cam1.mp4 , cam2.mp4 …) so that you can re-use this as a stitching reference.


Concatenation of your video files

Due to some restrictions (FAT32 format), video files from cameras are cut into 4GB files.
If you plan to render the whole sequence, you have to concatenate your videos before the stitching process.
