360 Panorama Issues (workflow and files included)

by brucewayne » Tue Jul 24, 2018 9:58 am

Hi there,

I started getting into panoramic photography about a month ago. The goal is to make a perfect virtual tour. I've read and watched every tutorial I was able to get my hands on and spent numerous hours studying and trying different shooting and stitching techniques.
However I am still not able to produce a perfect 360 degree image.
This is why I'm reaching out for some help here in the forums.

My equipment:
- Manfrotto 536 tripod with 100mm ball for leveling (very heavy and stable)
- Nodal Ninja NN4 head with Nodal Adapter
- Sony A7RII
- Metabones IV Adapter
- Canon 8-15mm Fisheye lens (I'm using it at 15mm)
- Autopano Giga 4.4.1 on MacOS

This is my shooting workflow:
- level the NN4 head
- shoot 6 images in vertical orientation (bracketing for HDR)
- shoot 1 zenith image
- shoot 2 nadir images with the tripod below the lens
- flip the Nodal Adapter and move the tripod so the lens is above the previous tripod center
- shoot 1 nadir image

And this is my post workflow:
- bring images into Lightroom to remove chromatic aberration and resizing
- bring images into Photomatix to make HDRs
- bring images into APG
-- detect
-- flip 90 degrees to look down at the floor and drop masking markers on the tripod
-- flip image back and use the vertical lines tool
-- export

So far so good but as you can see in the example I still have some stitching errors on the beams and on the floor.
The other bad thing is the patchy floor where I masked out the tripod.

I wonder if it's the images I shot or if it's just my lack of editing skills on the computer.
I'm pretty sure the NPP is correct. I adjusted it with the two pole method multiple times. But correct me if I'm wrong.

Feel free to download the HDR images here.

JPG (67MB) - https://we.tl/jzq3QHaAsO
TIFF (810MB) - https://we.tl/QIcdzts8Ru

I'm extremely thankful for your help.
And if you know any good tutorials please let me know. I'm always down to learn and don't mind spending some dollars.

Thank you!

Hi,
Could it be that there was a problem during the shot? perhaps tripod moved / hit.
If you do not take into account the images # 8, # 9 and # 10 the panoramic is almost perfect from the first moment, and after adding some control points I have not been able to find defects.
When you put those images back in the panorama, the discontinuities appear. When flicking between those images (# 8, #9 and # 10) and the others (# 1 to # 6) you can see the mismatch.

Hi Jordi,

The tripod did not move for shots #1 to #9.
When I shot #10 (the nadir) I moved the tripod to the side.

I tried to stitch the images #1 to #6 and added a lot of control points but I can still see some errors.
RMS was below 3.
I also fiddled around with the settings but no success so far.

Honestly I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks for your help!

I removed three pictures with tripod and pano was stitched perfectly. AutoPano Pro 4.4.1

Thanks for the replies guys.

What's your workflow or settings?
Is everything untouched (auto)?
Do you add additional control points manually?

Thanks again.

Hi,

Out of memory fails, I work with the default settings.
You can check my settings, if you download the .pano file and open it with the JPG that you have shared.

In my case, usually, I don't need to add control points, but for fisheye lenses the NPP is not a single point and it varies depending on the angle of entry, which we use is an approximation, a compromise solution
(See: http://michel.thoby.free.fr/Fisheye_his ... heory.html and http://www.pierretoscani.com/fisheyes-(in-english).html ).

What I do is that if in a first attempt I can see errors in the floor and / or ceiling then I add control points in those areas to "improve" the adjustment. (See "Adding control points to the selected areas" at http://www.kolor.com/wiki-en/action/vie ... nts_Editor).

Anyway, the main cause of the problems in this case is image # 10 which presents important parallax problems as you can see in the comparison between images # 5 and # 10 (image attached)

If I can be of help do not hesitate to ask for it.

Hi again,

Thanks for your help. I feel like the nadir always ruins my stitch.
I now drop in images 1 to 9 and fix all errors by adding control points.
After that I export cube faces and remove the tripod in Photoshop.

This works well for me and I'm happy with the results. Unfortunately APG can't export cube faces directly. Or am I wrong?

Cheers

Hi,

I'm glad you found a way to solve your problem.

You are right, AFAIK, Autopano does not have the possibility to export the cube faces directly and you need to do it through Panotour.
This would be a good proposal for the future of Autopano.

On the other hand many people successfully use a photo for the nadir. I do not know if it is possible to improve the process to avoid parallax errors.
Maybe someone with more experience in that can help you.

Cheers
Jordi

This is the first final panorama I made. Outside the house this time.
I can't find any errors so far.

Yes, it seems that everything is fine :)

I used the Nadir Adapter fo flip the camera and took a photo of the floor without the tripod.
I added this photo in Photoshop and not in APG.
