Aerial 360s - Benholm, Scotland

by gdavidson » Sat May 26, 2018 8:41 am

I've never shared anything here before! As a long term APG user that's found fresh perspectives from the air in the last two years, I though I would share some of the lush scenery this time of the year. These aerial 360s are shot from a Phantom 4 (standard), taken around Benholm, Scotland

The interactive tour is at https://roundme.com/tour/273299/view/838684 where you can look around a number of locations.

Hi, did you stitch the pano with APG ? If so how did you fill the sky at the top of the image please.

It's actually two separate panos brought together - the sky half is done with a Nikon D810 on the ground and then the ground half done from the Phantom 4.

Hi Graeme, I have recently started using APG for aerial 360 (P4P) but I keep getting stitching problems with the nadir. Any ideas please.

I find the Phantom can drift around a bit (I'm still using the original Phantom 4 not the Pro) and it can mess up the nadir somewhat.

To mitigate against this I use "optimise viewpoint" on all the images when first stitching them. It does help but sometimes I have to spend a lot of time ripping up control points and adding them back in. I give some thought to where I let control points be placed, avoiding tops of trees in the nadir shots where parallax errors can be greater and let the antighost engine deal with the errors in those trees where stitching errors will be less visible.

Scenes like these are challenging to stitch perfectly, the furrows really highlighting any stitching errors. Interactive version at https://roundme.com/tour/275882/view/849455/

I place control points on the furrows and try leave anything that may have parallax errors without control points.
