Autopano Giga 4.4.1 crash on Mac at Control Point Editor

by HenkDemper » Thu May 03, 2018 8:06 pm

I am an trying to stitch pano's again since maybe a few month ago. In the Editor, as soon as I hit the 'Control Point Editor' button, the Control Point Editor window becomes visible incl. control points, but then the application crashes. This happens consistently independently of the used source images. I tried deleting all APG preferences, disabling the external monitor but nothing helps. This used to work Ok on same Mac for ages. Details:

Computer: MacBook Pro, 16GB RAM, Mac OSX 10.13.4
Software: Autopano Giga 4.4.1 Mac
Images: Any source images
Steps: Drag-drop 2 source .jpg images -> Detect -> Edit -> Ctrl Points Editor -> Crash
Also crashes when opening existing projects and pressing 'Ctrl Points Editor'
Reproducible: Yes, it always happens

I uploaded 2 crash reports today and will be happy to debug further as needed.
I can only find related posts on this forum on the same symptoms from a few years ago...
Please help, as now Control Points Editor can not be used anymore !
(Other parts of the application still seem to work Ok)

Hello,

Did it happen after you upgrade your OS to High Sierra? Any other change?
APG is not yet fully compatible with macOS 10.13, but the next version.
That being said, I did not notice such issue on my MBPro 15" with High Sierra...

Let me know.

Best,
Olivier

Hello Oliver,

Thanks for the quick response !

> Did it happen after you upgrade your OS to High Sierra? Any other change?

It might have been indeed since I used Control Point Editor for last time that I either updated to High Sierra OR added one of the updates 10.13.x

> APG is not yet fully compatible with macOS 10.13

Could this be specifically in area of Control Point Editor, something with Graphics, ... ?
After my mail I tried changing the Graphics settings in APG (Enable/Fast editor/Compatibility), but that didn't help...

> but the next version

That would be APG 4.4.2... Any planning/date, Beta available (happy to test anything) ?

> I did not notice such issue on my MBPro 15" with High Sierra...

So I understand you can run Control Point Editor in APG 4.4.1 without issues on latest Mac 10.13.4 ?

Thanks so far,

Henk Demper

Hello Henk,

Whatever the image file format used (jpeg, tiff, raw) the app crash?

I don't think it is because of the video card especially if you disable the GPU (and restart the app to apply the change ;) )

I do not have any ETA regarding our next version, I'm sorry

What is the computer you use? Which model, date, CPU, GPU and RAM, please?

OK, I will make some new tests with High Sierra 10.13.4 on my MBPro 15" mid 2015 as I do not remember if I did such test after updating to 10.13.4 ;)

I'll keep you informed of course!
Cheers,
Olivier

Hi Olivier (sorry not Oliver),

> Whatever the image file format used (jpeg, tiff, raw) the app crash?

I tried both JPG and TIFF, as well as JPG's from existing projects (that used to work)

> you disable the GPU (and restart the app to apply the change ;) )

...yes I restarted ;-)

> I do not have any ETA regarding our next version, I'm sorry

Hmmm, a pity. I don't see many APG updates and that is Ok feature-wise I guess, but bug fixes is another story...
But let's first see if we can 'sync' our tests...

> What is the computer you use? Which model, date, CPU, GPU and RAM, please?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014)
Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB & Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB

> OK, I will make some new tests with High Sierra 10.13.4 on my MBPro 15" mid 2015

Let me know...

About the crash itself: I noticed that APG intercepts the crash and generates a DMP that I send (2x) to Kolor. 2 questions about that:

1. I don't see any APG .crash files (at least not in Console), are they somewhere available so we might see in which function the crash is and that might shine some light in the direction where we have to seek the issue ?

2. Did you/developers (or is that also you ? ;-)) receive my Crash Reports and what was the conclusion from that ?

Thanks !

Olivier/Oliver is the same ;)

Thanks for the specifications.
I received 3 crash reports, but unfortunately, it does not help a lot. As far as I know, they are not available on the system.

Cheers,
Olivier

Re: Autopano Giga 4.4.1 crash on Mac at Control Point Editor  [SOLVED]

by HenkDemper » Mon May 07, 2018 8:22 am

Hello Olivier,

During this weekend I tried again and for some strange reason it worked: I was able to use Control Point Editor without problems. It did not crash and I could use it again and again. So I tried to rule out the difference with previous tests. Usage of external monitors, network connection, different external drives, ... But whatever I did, it kept working without crashing. Which is strange, because before APG always crashed on Control Point Editor...

No software updates where installed. The only thing that happened was a crash-and-restart after Sleep mode of my MacBook Pro because of some GPU issue (never encountered that before):

Code: Select all
Event:               GPU Reset
Date/Time:           Sun May  6 12:24:55 2018
Application:         SystemUIServer
Path:                /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemUIServer.app/Contents/MacOS/SystemUIServer
Tailspin:            /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/gpuRestart2018-05-06-122455.tailspin
GPUSubmission Trace ID: 0
Version:             462
OS Version:          Mac OS X Version 10.13.4 (Build 17E202)
Graphics Hardware:   Intel Iris Pro
Signature:           8803

Report Data:

===========================================================================
                         Intel GPU Hang Summary
                              version 1.0.0
===========================================================================

-- Summary of Status for ALL Rings --
MAIN Ring   is hung in the ring      <-- ROOT CAUSE!
MEDIA Ring   is idle
BLT Ring   is waiting on a semaphore
VEBOX Ring   is idle

Maybe that has something to do with the APG crashes or at least the reboot itself 'reset' something ?
So for the moment please consider this issue 'solved'.
I will keep an eye on it and if it happens again post a new message.

Thanks for your quick support !

Hi Henk,

Thanks for the information which is very strange indeed. I'd be curious to know what has changed?

Cheers,
Olivier

Hello Olivier,

> I'd be curious to know what has changed?

As said, the only change as far as I know is the reboot (caused by mentioned crash)...
That might have reset something in the GPU/... or alike ?

But indeed strange and I'll let you know if it happens again.

Hi Henk,

A crash doesn't reset any value.
OK, keep me informed if needed.

Have a nice week.
Cheers,
Olivier
