I have been taking a succession of photos of a cylindrical vase every 10 degrees, then using mageMagick to select a central vertical strip from each & then adjoin them as an 'unwrapped' 2D image.
This could be excellent on valuables like vases, etc...
I would prefer to be able to auto-merge them as I do with AutoPano, but the geometry seems to defeat it.
Can anyone advise if it is likely to work with some tweaking? Or has done anything similar?

This shows early attempts- I can get better then this, but the joins are still obvious as just abutted side-by-side.

is it possible to make a set of (resized jpg) images available? Would be interesting to play with.
so you want to paste such slices to one flat image together using autopano?
load the images to apg. set focal in image properties to 1.000mm or even up to 100.000mm.

There is a zipped file at http://www.diga.me.uk/centrestrips.zip with a set of low-res sliced images.
Part of my problem is that the pattern repeats, but the software therefore brings images from two or more DIFFERENT locations and superposes them.
I'll be interested if you get any good results- thanks for being interested.

It appear that the relative orientation of vase and camare is not precisely vertical.
If you set the Layout option to Single row or column then at least the images will be placed in order:

Thanks for help & comments, mediavets.
I'll keep playing. The non-planar surface of the jug will be better ignored if I (tele)photo from a greater distance. And centering irregular objects on an axis is not easy. I'll also try greater number of angular positions, & see whether to use slices with little or a lot of overlap. Hadn't realised you can force image order, either...
I'm investigating HugIn. Had already downloaded for my Linux machine.
I had an old AutoPano ( the free download, watermarking) on my XP machine. Just tried to replace it with current download & it won't run. So that's something else to investigate. Ho hum..
Must say there is some tremendous work 'out there' on stitching of all sorts. Thanks guys.

The latest version takes a while to load to the point you see anything on my XP system.

Slow progress- still waiting for Raspberry Pi camera to be released.
Left-hand is a curled-up printout at the kind of quality I'm presently getting.
I increasingly suspect auto-stitching will not work well for this kind of thing.
