AP3.5: has WinXP support been dropped?

I've just tried to start the trial of Autopano Giga v3.5 on Windows XP, SP3 (32-bit).
Has its support been dropped? AP3.5 doesn't start at all...

Welcome to the forum...

The FAQ suggests that APG 3.5 is still supported on XP:

But there's no doubt it runs better on a 64-bit OS with a lot of RAM and fast disks.

3.x starts without a problem on the same system, 3.5 doesn't.
I've uninstalled 3.0, reinstalled 3.5 - same problem.
Then I've installed 3.0 again and it works... so there must be a problem with 3.5.

Like many other software packages - every new version of APP/APG seems to be more demanding of hardware.

Same here. APG3.5 never starts properly on XP SP3 while perfectly happy under Win7 64bit on the same hardware. The program does not actually crash because, looking at some execution traces, it never really gets going and closes after looking for some non-existent dll's. Seems like a problem with the installer rather than the shortcomings of XP.

I've used ProcessExplorer and the last message I'm getting in memory is:

Fatal Error: This program was not built to run on the processor in your system. The allowed processors are: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 and compatible Intel processors. Enables new optimizations in addition to Intel processor-specific optimizations.


I've got an AMD Athlon II X2 240e processor... So AutoPano turned Intel ony??

Hello tobwen,

No, Autopano does not turn intel only.
We recently update our development toolchain to get better performance on high end processors. It seems that what you are experiencing is a side effect of this change. We are investigating to understand the scope of that.

I read on the News tonight that Microsoft have now ended its XP support as from tonight... Real shame, XP was the only Windows version I liked to use. Some of the new versions are a mine field but I guess its a matter of getting used to it.. I think I will stick with Mac.. For one reason, it never crashes.. =D In the 6 years I have been using a Mac, I have had only two lockups and I am sure it was my fault.. Trying to do too much in one go..

Fully offtopic, but the reason why a Mac is such stable is simple:
a) Hardware and driver developers know the Apple hardware very will, since there's a small range of possible combinations and models,
b) also the Apple developers can optimize their OS, since there are only some models they need to care about.

As you can read on this forum: within 20 PC-users there might be 10 different processors with 15 different motherboards and 20 different RAM manufactors, but within 20 Mac-users there might be only 2-4 different models.

Yes tobwen.. This is true...

Real shame XP has lost its support.. The News again this morning said there are thousands of users still using it and even some banks... Many schools in Australia still use XP too.. I have never had XP crash but I have had the newer versions crash.. I wonder is all XP version software will work on the newer Windows versions...

Drivers are a problem... my old DIN-A2 SCSI scanner isn't supported anymore.
Furthermore the 16-bit stack has been removed: at our University, man scientific programs don't work on newer versions of Windows. The portation to newer compilers is too expensive, so they virtualize Windows XP on Windows 7 machines without internet access =D

Have a look at Vuescan, excellent software compatible with 1200 scanners, Windows, OSX, and Linux .

Hmm...

On most forums it would be considered a bad form to hijack a thread, especially to discuss 'angels on a pinhead' subject such as Apple is better than Microsoft etc. Obviously this forum is an exception.

The SCSI card can't be detected - I have to check eBay to get a working one...
But SCSI cables are too short anyway... only about 50 cm and there's no SCSI-2-USB :mad:

Some sum up are needed:
- XP dropped ? Not from kolor part (or at least not intentionally). But as we are using Microsoft toolchain, there might be some repercussion from their dropping.
- This bug is coming from our use of Intel compiler on some AMD CPU. We are not Intel only, of course. We reported this issue to the Intel team for inspection. Waiting for their feedback.

After some investigation with Intel engineers, we are using optimization which are not fully compatible before Windows 7 sp1 (it can work but it's not guarantee).
One solution can be to remove these optimizations for the 32bit version only. Even it's not garantee, we can imagine that most of XP users are on 32bit versions.
Is it the case of users who report this crash ?

That would be helpful. I run a dual boot system (XP SP3 32 bit and Win7 64 bit) for various reasons and I could live with a slower 32 bit version for that occasional use when I do not want to reboot into Win7. Could you give it a try ?
