Hello All,
I am trying to attempt at a Gigapixel HDR shot. My Autopan Pro has being crashing when I try to detect the pano. It is about 200+ Photos from my H3DII-50, where each file size is about 300mb each(8176 * 6132 Tiff 16bit, PhotoRGB), so its about 60+ gig of actual data.
Now I have read the FAQ on handling such panos. I am Wondering if anyone else is having trouble with this?
I run a 8 core Mac with 16 gig of Ram, should be enough Hardware.

I would suggest HDR first with Photomatix Pro, then Pano with Autopano Pro. I find it works nicely for me.
An extra step with each set, I agree, but the control on the HDR section is good.

My only suggestion is to lower your keypoints per image pair and try disabling "Strong Algorithm".
Also disable the Automate functions during the initial Detection.
That's really a shot in the dark though.
However you work this out, please post the result!

Thanks for the advice, I am currently waiting on Auto-Pano to finish its current attempt at detection before I try all this out. It takes about 2 hrs for the program to crash on me.
This is my 1st real Pano attempt with this camera, so I was merely shooting the view from my Roof. Its a wonderful view, see how it turns out.

Ok I got the system to detect the panos, but It is now showing any panos for me to edit.

Make sure under the View menu it says "Split 50%" or hit Command 2.
It may be that the "Panos" window isn't showing?
Or do you have an empty Panos window after detection?

Sorry I did not notice my error.
The Panos are not showing.... I am in Spilt 50% mode.
It loads, located the pano and then it does not display anything after that, even hitting the render button produces no results.

Allright this is annoying.
I have loaded every combination I can think, I have loaded manuelly on the needed photos, I drop the bit dept and colour space, it will either crash, or detect the panos, but will not display them in any shape or form.
What is the actually upper limit of the Pano software, because I have thrown it 15 gig smallest to 120 gig of photos and it will get so far as attempt to run the projection of the 1st pano and then the pano all vanish as if its not there. It says it found X panos, but there are no panos.

What version of APP are you running? there is alpha 2 which you may try, its quite improved version but still has bugs to be sorted out. (no mac version yet)
Doing this with 1.4.2 (x64 version) may work better.

I am running 1.4.2. I manage to find the Pano files it created, and when I load them back in Manually, they sometimes 15% success rate, they pop back up.

I know the H3D very well - it´s a great camera. But i wouldn´t use it for stitching - though it seems to be logical.
A way to use it would be to lower the numbers of shots. In the end it provides no more quality than a 5DMkII using a larger amount of shots.
No difference in the end.
Generating HDR FIRST in Photomatix is my standard advice. Photomatix also is somewhat limited using very big amounts of pictures in HighDefinition.
HDR makes shooting @16bit obsolete - blowing up the files is the only effect. You´re generating 32bit anyway by processing HDR. 8bit shooting is by far enough - especially using a H3D.

I agree with klaus,
16 bit tiff that too in photoProRGB, are you shooting a scene which has all the outer shades of the color gamut which cant be produced in srgb?
You may convert your files to 8bit jpeg saved @12 (photoshop quality) & then try your hdr.

I have given up on the HDR part right now, I just want it to render.
I have already spend so much effort on it, I would like to finish it up if at all possible. I do not own a 5DMkII, I shoot a Nikon D300.

A D300 does it as fine as a 5DMkII/III or a H3D . . . . you just have to shoot some more pictures. Though the number of pictures is higher of course, the handling nevertheless "flows" better. At least that´s my experience after using a (rented) H3D for stitching.
But in some cases of course it´s essential to have as few shots as possible - here a H3D is a great advantage.
I had an assignment to shoot fast moving scenes for 7m print-outs @150dpi.
In that case even a H3D didn´t match. I shot analog using a 6x17cm camera and drumscanned the Velvia trannies - perfect highrez.

LOL....In the end you choose the write tool for the right job. Nothing beats a Large Format Camera with Slide film for quality.
This Pano I am making is a night shot of the city from my roof to see how it renders, before I do one for the entire Sydney CBD.
But if it can't handle these files, I can't possible imagine handling D300 with that much more photos and just as much harddisk space used.
I will take you up on your advice, but for now I do not want to waste my existing work. I have rendered a smallish 1.7 gig pano in really crappy colour, but I do not want all the work to look like it went to waste.

You may be tempted to use APP assuming its "fill it-shut it-forget it" application but its not the case.
Its quite quick & automatic in most task but under the hood it has a lot of buttons & knobs which will require for the job which you are feeding to it & that also needs a "very good" understanding of those buttons. Without this understanding you or any other will feel dejected with APP.
Few Suggestion I have
1. please post the screen shots that helps all of us to know what are we dealing with.
2. either use 16 bit tiffs & no hdr
or
use 8bit jpeg & do HDR with separate application which can handle gigapixel files. (I can help in that)
3. HDR within APP is not great so I wont go that route.
4. Load all your 8bit HDR jpegs & stitch the 3 layers separately sorting them by bracket & don't do any color correction with APP.
Nothing beats a Large Format Camera with Slide film for quality.

Depends on how good are you with large format vs gigapixel stitching.
My panoramic journey started bcoz I saw few "large format" images which were stunning but later the photographer who was excellent in lens design theory told me that all the images were stitched & rendered in rectilinear projection, too perfect to believe my eyes which was wondering what lens was used for those images.
Several years ago he used D1x with Nikon 85/105/55mm lenses which threw many large format to shame, now if he has to do this with your H3DII-50, I can imagine his results.
Hope you can get some help in doing this project successfully, most members will be happy to do so.

Well Digpano, that is an excellent point I should keep that in mind.
As for my problem, I wish I could give you a screen shot, there is no error message unless I gave you my Macs's Core dump of it. As of now, it will open, load the .pano file, start rendering and then quit without warning. I will see what I can do to show you the error.
I am not using APP to do HDR anymore. I am following everyone's advice here.
I have attempted several different format combination.
16bit tiff PhotoRGB
16 bit tiff AdobeRGB
8 bit tiff AdobeRGB (Testing this now)
8 bit tiff srgb
the 8bit SRGB worked, but the colors are really bad in this one.
Anyhow, I will take your advice and read up more on APP.

This is an issue that I have known for awhile on the Mac platform. Smartblend will sometimes work. I do not know what the issue is. If i feed it 100 images, it has a greater chance of not crashing. My temp drive is 4 sas 15k drives. The read and write speeds are near 500mb/sec.

Seeing the screen shot what I feel that the skydoes have a gradient which will need either 16bit tiffs or get jpegs processed with minimum tweaking in 8bits to do hdr.
I suggest the following.
1.raw to jpeg conversion 8bit jpegs (don't boost contrast/saturation & sharpening should be OFF completely )
2. Load all jpegs let the panorama get detected with good RMS
3. set the layers to "group by speed" & add the %L to file name now set the pano with no color correction using multiband (smartblend need more resources) Save as Jpeg 12 maximum quality.
4. Now render 1st half the size & see upto what size you can render without crashing.
4a- if at full size it still crashes the youcan rendr them 1 layer each time, for doing that you will have to go to layer window > group by speed> untick the 2 layers
4b- once you get all 3 layers rendered then we will seek hdr methods.
With these setting I guess you should be able to get a full size pano if not then try the following method.
1. At full resolution crop the pano once left half
& then the right half with 10% overlapping area.
2. now load these left & right panos & stitch them together (you would need to set the focal length manually to some 200mm onwards)
Let us know how it goes with the above suggestion.

My experiences are that it seems to be easier to handle a large amount of smaller pictures than a smaller amount of big picture-files like the one coming from a H2D or a Hy6 for example.
Maybe i´m completely wrong - but i tested both of them and there were some issues when using 16bit files of about 300MB each.

klausesser, If what you say is true, would contacting Kolor Tech support be the best way to resolve this? Because its a problem in the code already.
