Re: [papywizard] Usefull Presets

Hi Andrew!

I must say, i missed some of the informations which Frédéric and Georges sent me - i was constantly on the run and absorbed by "non-panoramical" jobs.
So i´ll have to read everything carefully again. Thanks again for your help - i´ll try to find out the procedere in deep.

best to you, Klaus

Re: [papywizard] Usefull Presets

Hi Andrew! Hi Frédéric! Hi Georges!

I just want to say hello and to be glad to be back to communicate! winkcool

Andrew: i downloaded your preset, stored it on the removable card of my N800 and tried to load it into Papywizard 1.4.0 - it doesn´t appear in the preset-menue.

Now - there are three storages in the N800:
the N800 (that´s where the log-files are stored)
the internal storageCard
the removable stroage card

I put it onto the removable card - do i have to create a folder for it first?

Besides: to use a log-file to convert - which kind of log do i have to use? At some settings i only see dark-blue text on a black background . . that´s unreadable. I usually use "trace" - but it doesn´t work in 1.4.0! It uses "Debug" though i set "Trace".

best to you, guys - Klaus

I guess there´s a problem how i downloaded the file:

when i clicked the link, the file opened as text. I copied the text and pasted it into a BBEdit page and saved it.
Otherwise it appears as a Dreamweaver-file on my Mac . . . funny.

I´ll try to copy it another way . .

In Firefox i used "save site" - and get a Dreamweaver-file again. When i open it with Dreamweaver it´s messed with signs . . can´t be correct i think.

Now i´ll try to use the N800 to download it instead oft my Mac. Let´s see . . . cool

update:
when i visit the download-link there only appeares:

"Z 10 around +45 10 around 0 10 around -45 N"

That´s all what´s displayed. When i use Safari on Mac it´s the same. When i use Firefox on Mac i see the whole text.

Re: [papywizard] Usefull Presets

The way you download the file seams OK. As long as you get a simple text (ascii file), you should be able to load it. Make sure that BBEdit does save it under a special format, adding some tags or so.

It does not matter where you put it on the Nokia, as long as you can import it from the import menu; the GTK file widget can browse the entire file system. So, as soon as you see your xml file, you select it, and it should appear in the combobox. If Papywizard can't load it, you will get an error (at least in the 1.4.0 release; don't remember when I added the checking).

To convert a previously shot pano, you don't need the log file - the one you can see from the Help menu- but the data file - the one you activate from the shooting menu. This file is saved in the dir specified in the last tab off the config dialog. By default, it is named:

papywizard_YYY-MM-DD_HhhMMmSSs_mosaic.xml

when you shoot a mosaic, which is what you want to do.

Re: [papywizard] Usefull Presets

Hi Frédédric!

Thanks - i made it! smile I made a mistake first while copying via BBEdit.
Now it´s in the preset-directory and i´ll try it in an hour or so and will report what happens . . tongue

I confused the outputscript with the log-file - thought it´s the same . . roll

best to you (and: good to read you again! All of you guys!), Klaus

This will enable you to test a custom preset file, by temporarily importing the custom preset. When you close Papywizard the 'connection' with the file will be lost. Of course you can re-instate the connection with the custom preset file using File/Import when next running Papywizard.

If you want to add the custom preset file permanently to Papywizard you need to move the file to a particular location in the internal memory file system of the Nokia tablet:
/home/user/.config/papywizard/

Here's the documentation about this:
http://trac.gbiloba.org/papywizard/wiki … tompresets

This location is in part of the file system that cannot be accessed by the standard File Manager. So you need to install an additional File Manager - the easiest to use is GPE File Manager which you can install from this page (if you access with Nokia):
http://maemo.org/downloads/product/OS20 … lemanager/

Once installed you access the GPE File manager from Extras - which is where you also find Papywizard.

If you already have a custom preset file installed you will need to edit it to add the contents/definition for the new custom preset otherwise it will get overwritten.
..............

If you wish to convert a data file (created during a shoot) to a preset then the online conversion tool is here:
http://trac.gbiloba.org/papywizard/wiki/PresetConverter

Re: [papywizard] Usefull Presets

Hi Andrew, hi Frédéric!

I tested your preset, Andrew - works very well!! smile i´ll have to check the NPP-alignment.
Big time-saver!
Also the way to set a total FOV manually by typing in the values is very comfortable and allows intuitive and fast
shooting, Frédéric.
The visual design is absolutely fantastic and leads to a more relaxed shooting because of visualising your control.

Very well made, Frédéric - and thanks again, Andrew. I hope i will also be able to add something helpful in the future.

best, Klaus

Thanks for the feedback - I'm glad the preset works OK.

If you need any more custom presets I'll be happy to help you with them.

I think the finest contribution you can make as pro-photographer will be to pass on your tips and tricks and ideas about how best to use Merlin+Papywizard with APP - as a pano photography system - to help us amateurs become better photographers.

Your descriptions of how you wished it would work - saying that you wished there was a faster way to define a pano shoot than manually moving the head to define the corners - have already borne fruit in the new ability to define a pano shoot by manual entry of Total FOV values.

I could send you the preset or you can download it:
http://www.three60views.org.uk/presets/ … 16crop.xml

However I'm not sure if it should be added to the defaults even if it works for Klaus.

It is specifically for the physically short and compact Canon EF 20mm f/2.8 lens on a 1.6x crop Canon body to shoot a spherical.

I don't think this is a lens many people will own, or use with a 1.6x crop body for shooting sphericals.

The preset includes a +90 zenith shot and I fear that with some Canon bodies and some mounting rails - or if the user tried to use this preset with physically longer zoom lenses set at 20mm - there's a strong possibility that the camera or rail may hit the Merlin base so it may be safer not to include such a preset as a default?

wink too much honour, Andrew. I´m too just "cooking with water" as we sa< here . . tonguecool
But i´ll try - i promise!

One thing i have meditated about is this: When we connect a "video-out" of a DSLR to the USB-port of the N770 or N800 - maybe we could see live-view (if the camera provides one, of course - more and more do) right away on the message-pad?
In case of mounting the head/camera on a pole ore any othe remote situation that would be helpful to set a rectangular pano of high resolution.
The head-controlling would go by BT - just for viewfindig before the shooting that would be great.

I once tested a device where a small camera is attached to the ocular of a DSLR and transmits the viewfinder image via 10m cable to a small monitor. Not bad for ajusting the combination!

Actual cameras have live-previews via the TV connector - i don´t know wether the N770 or N800 can take the signals . . .?

best, Klaus

Re: [papywizard] Usefull Presets

I don't think it is possible; Nokia does not have video signal input. Don't know through usb, but I guess it is not easy (770 can't, as its usb port can't be a host).

Re: [papywizard] Usefull Presets

Not cheap but offers a compact robust wireless video link....
http://www.hicam.com.au/pro_x2.htm

If you are content with a wired connection then use a small camcorder with AV-in or a small battery powered TV/monitor to display the video-out from the DSLR.

If you use a Windows PC to host Papywizard then of course you could display the video-out from the DSLR in a window using a USB video (capture) adapter on the PC for input

Yes, I've seen information about that before. I thought it was very expensive for what it is.

Re: [papywizard] Usefull Presets

Hi Andrew!

Tofay i see bigwade´s real small footprint. I t hink it´s good to shoot at least 3 Nadir and Zenith shots instead of one (especially for Nadir - but i saw somd problems also with Zenith when shooting inside a room).
How can i modify your exellent preset you made for my 20mm? I guess by adding, let´s syay, two for Zenth and Nadir each typing in the 2 additional yaw-angles each?

Klaus,

What yaw separation would you like for the 3 zenith shots and the 3 nadir shots; 120 degrees?

Do you still wish to have zenith shots at +90 pitch and nadir shots at -90 pitch?

I guess at least 3 shots for each Nadir and Zenith would guarantee a smaller footprint - i did a six-shot Nadir at the river-pano and that resultet in a suprisingly small footprint due to the rotation.

here (i sticked the Aircable and it´s board to the foot):

Hi Andrew!

I sent you a PN. I forgot: Nadir and Zenith doesn´t have to be @90deg if there are several shots at different positions using less than 90deg. I found the footprint gets smaller with several shots at less than 90deg.
Easy to close with an extra shot.
But there´s an isue with the overlap - i guess it´s too small. Using my Manfrotto i always have 12 shots hor. That results in about 30% overlap - which is quite safe.

best, Klaus

Klaus,

See if you prefer this as a preset for your Canon 20mm lens.

I'm not sure I really understand the idea of having more shots close to the zenith and nadir - but try it and let me know what you think and what further changes you would like.

Copy the text below and save as a file named presets.xml (avoid opverwriting your existing presets.xml prest for the Canon 20mm!

Re: [papywizard] Usefull Presets

Andrew - man, how can i ever compensate your efforts to help . .  .

when i use the Manfrotto i use to shoot at least 4 most times 6 Nadir shots at less than 90deg (forgot the absolute deg.)
That causes the base to be very small - seems due to the amount of images by panning around - when smartblend is used. And due to the fact the lens looks beneath the base, i guess.

best, Klaus

Klaus,

I'm happy to help; it really doesn't take me much time now I've got the 'hang' of making presets. The only slightly fiddly bit is working out the shooting sequence to minimise head movemenst between shots.

Let me know if it works for you - you may wish to go back to a more conventional single +90 zenith?

smile - i´ll run a test tomorrow in the morning.
A single +90 i had some problems inside rooms with on unicoloured ceilings. Several Zenith-shots at less than 90deg "see" more details for control-points.

best, Klaus

P.S.: i mean: better shooting some shots as redundance than spending much time in postpro . . cool

Re: [papywizard] Usefull Presets

Frederic,

Is it possible to have comments in a presets XML file?

If so, what is the syntax, please?
