Very strange!!! I've just changed the date to XXhXXmXXs because I found that Windows didn't like the ':'. And my tests on the Nokia where made with this new name, so I didn't see the problem. Sorry! I think this is because of the file-system on the MMC: I guess it is fat, and fat does not seem to support ':'...
I also got the problem with the crash when opening Help menu. This bug will be hard to find, as I don't get any python traceback; the problems occurs in a C library (PyGTK, I suppose). But it is maybe related to the Nokia env. I tried to remove load-applet, but still have the bug. But my Nokia seems to be completly mad, because it freezes all the time, I can't add/remove packages from the Application Manager, and I have other strange behaviours... So I will have to install a new system, if I don't quiclkly find the problem (Arrg, I'm speaking like Windows users!
).
Paul, Andrew, could you make a test, and first remove load-applet, then gpe file manager, if you installed it?

Yes its is FAT - otherwise Windows would not be able to read it when Nokia tablet is connected via USB.
There are ways (hacks) to partition a card and have one partition FAT and the other(s) *nix/Maemo.

My 770 is also rather unstable now too, tends to hang/freeze frequently when using the browser and did hang when running Papywizard too. Only way to recover was to remove the battery. Also have had spontaneous reboots and the system seems at times to run very slowly.
I wonder whether those symbolic links we added to enable the file manager programs to view/access the rest of the filesystem are the reason?
There's a suggestion that this may be so in a post in this thread, where there it suggests that setting symbolic links screws up something else on the Nokia tablet:
http://www.internettablettalk.com/forum … hp?t=14983
BTW how does one remove the symbolic links?

Sorry,
it really seems to be the symbolic link mechanism, as my N770 slows down and eats memory and wastes cpu-time.
The bug:
metalayer-crawler will continue forever crawling the entire filesystem
Fixed in chinook and diablo, but that does not help us on bora.
Now I need help to purge the symbolic link. :-(

Any camera supported by gphoto2:

Linux applications:
- a lot of very detailled instructions to install them
- a rather decent documentation about how they work
- a very neglected user's guide if any
- nothing about their purpose (that is: object, aim, use.)
The page
http://www.gphoto.org is a perfect example of that. Even if the reader is supposed to know that one can trigger a digital camera from some sort of computer when using the referred application(s), he certainly would like to see some confirmation of that and would like to know more. Alas, as a rule, a potential user must be acquainted with at least one person who know what a Linux application is good for. A comparison with APP front page
http://www.autopano.net/ will show what I mean...
IMHO
http://trac.gbiloba.org/papywizard/wiki is something between one and the other...

You are so right!
The Linux world seems (to me) to be very introspective - a geek 'cult'. It is almost as if they don't want 'normal people' to take part.
If you can't read and understand source code and if you don't have a thorough grasp of the OS they don't seem to want you to play with them.
Once I've got Papywizard set up and working reliably on my Nokia 770 I'm hoping to do some work, with others, on the Papywizard Wiki so that it is more intelligible for 'the rest of us'.

just start xterm, then:
rm name_of_the_symbolic_link
in my case: rm Root
or: rm ./MyDocs/Root
-----------------------------------
N770 does not eat up all mem as before
File Manager works fine, copy to MMC (filenames no colon) works fine

I can't remember now what symbolic links I set. So I think maybe I'll have to reflash the OS and start all over again.
When you say yiu can now copy papywizard data.xml files from filesystem to MMC are you talking about using the gpe-filemanager?
I have uninstalled gpe-filemanager as Frederic asked. Will I need it to do the file transfer?
........
As much as I prefer the physical design of the 770 over the 800 and 810 I am wishing now that I had spent a bit more and got an 800. It seems as if the 770 was perhaps never really ready for 'prime time' and it will never run OS2008.
I'm sure the 770 can be made to run Papywizard reliably but there seems to be so much else it can't/won't do that an 800 would.
Oh well....

Ok, thanks for the information. Too bad is is not fixed in bora
I will try to kill the process which lead to this problem; it may not be mandatory...
Copying should work with both file managers, now.
To retreive symbolic links, just use the following command:
$ find ~ -type l

Andrew, there is also a OS2008 firmware for the 770:

That URL goes nowhere.
After reading this I don't think I'll try it:

Not so, the default file manager cannot see the whole filesystem without the symbolic link that seems to cause major problems.
But gpe-filemanager can do it OK - if you use Copy and Paste; you cannot use Move. But attempting to rename (menu/File/Rename) a file (on the filesystem or MMC) causes gpe-filemanager to crash.
I still feel that this solution is rather 'clunky'.

Funny: it works fine under Konqueror, but not with firefox!

Yes, you're right.

I will try to find a better solution...

No, it opens fine, I did not have any crash when opening Help menu.

???!!??? I've just check on my Nokia: now it works with r918, but crashs with r927 (not yet online). But it used to crash also with 918...
Can you try the r927:
http://www.gbiloba.org/download/papywiz … 27_all.deb
This version outputs the init response from the Merlin when connecting. I would like you give me this answer. For that, turn on the debug log level (from configuration menu), then connect to the head. Then, opens the Help > View log menu. If this menus crashes the app, start it from the xterm ($ papywizard.sh), and read the log on the xterm.
You should read something like:
2008-10-20 18:48:14,974::Dummy-5::DEBUG::Head.init(): initializing axis... 2008-10-20 18:48:15,102::Dummy-5::DEBUG::Axis.init(): full circle count=0xe62d3 2008-10-20 18:48:15,136::Dummy-5::DEBUG::Axis.init(): sidereal rate=0x6f9 2008-10-20 18:48:15,229::Dummy-5::DEBUG::Axis.init(): full circle count=0xe62d3 2008-10-20 18:48:15,259::Dummy-5::DEBUG::Axis.init(): sidereal rate=0x6f9 2008-10-20 18:48:15,260::Dummy-5::DEBUG::Head.init(): axis initialized
I would like to understand why some head turn fast, and other not...

If the app crashs when opening the Help menu, try to remove the papywizard.conf file. If it still fails, uninstall Papywizard first... I would like to understand...

Don't think this is what you want but....
I re-flashed to OS2007HE (latest Fiasco) as mentioned previously then re-installed Python, osso x-term, gpe-filemanager and Papywizard 1.0 (via catalogue) . I did not install Load Applet.
Papywizard Help menu crashed when selected.
Then I uninstalled Papywizard 1.0 from Application Manager and installed Papywizard r927.
Help menu still crashes.
Ran Papywizard from x-term and it failed to load/run.
Here's the x-term output:
BusyBox v1.4.1 (2007-03-12 19:00:25 EET) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

So I removed papywizard.conf (why did uninstall not remove that?) and ran Papywizard (not from x-term) and it loads and runs but Help menu still crashes the program.
I have still not got my 4201 soldered up so cannot connect it to the Merlin to run your other test, sorry.
..............
Strangely enough the Help menu was working with r918 last night - previously it had always crashed the program - before I had my major no-boot problem after a freeze up. I was on a different Wifi connection/location but I can't see why that should have made any difference.

r918 also used to crash for me, but does not crash anymore. But then, r927 crashes... Did you try without gpe-filemanager?
Uninstalling an application never removes the preferences in you home dir; it just removes system-wide preferences...

Do you mean that when startedfrom xterm, Papywizard immediatly crashes, whithout opening the Help menu?

Mmm, this is maybe the point: I added a socket server so the 3D app. can connect and be refreshed in real-time according to Papywizard positions; it may crash when the connection is not active, or something like that... I will dig that way.

Yes, r927 did before I removed the papywizard.conf file left from previous install of 1.0.
And I posted what I got from x-term as program attempted to load/run.

I don't know whether this is relevant to the above but I had a similar Papywizard program crash (just once) when attempting to select the File menu rather than the Help menu.
