Re: Something To Run Papywizard...

Windows7 on TC1100

except SD-Card everything is working (as it is limited to 1gb not such a big prob)
stylus, HP-Buttons, screen keyboard, sound, BT, lan, wlan, screen rotation

installing the HP-drivers for Video and buttons has to be done in compatibility mode - then they work

I am just stitching the first panos ... modestly starting with 2 or 3 pics each

Paul,

I am amazed that the beta of Windows 7 works so well on rare old Tablet PC hardware.

Re: Something To Run Papywizard...

ReadyBoost speeds it up ...

I put in a 4gb usb-micro-stick which is used by Win7 as ReadyBoost-Device
it compensates the modest 768mb-ram a little

the pic stitched to 10% of its size, it lasts less than a minute

If Flash has a life span of approx. 300,000 write cycles how long will it last?

Re: Something To Run Papywizard...

Paul and Frederic,

I am pretty happy with the Nokia 770 and more so the N800 for running Papywizard, and I have an old but reliable IBM Thinkpad T23 with 1.1GHz P3 and 1GB RAM.

You both seem very keen on the TC1100 and I have a chance to buy one for less than £200; this apprs to be less than the typical price but it still seems quite a lot for what it offers compared to more conventional laptops.

However I don't really understand why you are so excited about the TC1100.

What if anything does it offer over the N800 as a host for Papywizard?

What other virtues does it have related to pano shooting with Merlin?

In short why should I want one?

Re: Something To Run Papywizard...

Andrew,
what I like on the TC1100 is its small size, solid screen, disk capacity and that I'm able to connect it with my cam to take a quick look on sharpness of pics, thats an issue with long focallength. I feel much more comfortable if I can look on a testpic before shooting gigapano.

Beside that it is a real pc, runs windows and linux, stitches, is a pic tank and even a nice sofa device and and ...

I couldn't imagne that Win7 runs so well on it.

Re: Something To Run Papywizard...

Andrew, don't see the TC1100 as a replacement for the Nokia 700/N800; these small devices are much more easy to use on the field when you don't need to do complex things. There are ideal for running Papywizard 1.x. But TC1100 as a lot of nice features (more powerfull, large screen, USB host, mass storage...), and will be great to run Papywizard 2.x (at least to run all the planned features).

Last, as soone as I find a N800 at a good price, I will buy one.

Re: Something To Run Papywizard...

Paul,

Thanks for the feedback.

Yes I can understand some of those things.

My camera uses SD cards so I an take the card from the camera and plug the card into the N800 to check a test image.

I can't stitch on the N800 but I could on my Thinkpad - and I could easily take that with me in the car. I don't plan to hike anywhere with the merlin - do you plan to take the  Merlin and camera and lenses and TC1100 on a hike to shoot panos?

Do I need a pic tank? I think not - SD cards are very cheap these days.

IMO the N800 is a real computer and a very handy 'sofa device'.

Don't you find text is very small at 1024x768 one that 10.5 inch on the TC1100 for general PC usage?

I'm yet to be convinced that I need to spend £200 on another 'toy' - I love such 'toys' of course but would I really find it that useful?

How can I 'justify' the expense to myself?

Frederic,

Thanks for your feedback.

So you think that a system with the compute power and graphics capibilities of the TC1100 will be enough to run (well) all planned features of Papywizard 2.x?

If so I think that maybe an Intel Atom based MID may also have enough compute power.

Did you know that you can switch the USB port on an N800 to host mode?
..........

BTW what do you consider a 'good price' for an N800?

Unless we add crazy features, yes, it will be far enough wink

If so I think that maybe an Intel Atom based MID may also have enough compute power.

I don't know the relative power of all these devices... But does MID will have USB host bus, large storage capacity, and so? For CPU, I guess it will be OK...

Did you know that you can switch the USB port on an N800 to host mode?

Yes, I know, but you still need to power it up. And it does not solve all other missing features.

BTW what do you consider a 'good price' for an N800?

Well, for now, I don't have the money to put in it, but I would like to find one for 100€ max. I will wait for new Nokia devices: prices of previous models will fall.

Re: Something To Run Papywizard...

I have read with great interest your discussion about usb host features for acquiring the images direct to an external source and I think I have a possible hardware solution.

The Archos series of devices can be made to run Qtopia, they have host USB and an internal hard drive in a small 'pocketable' form factor.

With a possible move to using Qt as the basis of the application, I just thought you may want to have a look at them.

Thanks for the feedback. Do you own such device? It could be interesting to make some tests, as 1.9.0 dev release is now using PyQt4 wink

Re: Something To Run Papywizard...

No worries, this does looks like a more appropriate thread.

Unfortunately I don't, I just had one of those eureka moments when USB host and Qt was mentioned and my mind went "hey, you know what...."
