WARNING: Google Drive closes web page hosting August 31rst

by Annis » Fri Aug 19, 2016 9:45 am

Hello,

As you should already know, Google will be permanently disabling the possibility to host web pages on Google Drive on August 31rst.

If you didn't know, you should have received this newsletter by e-mail from Google:
Hello from Google,

We announced last year that we’re deprecating web hosting in Google Drive for users and developers. Our records show that you might have used this feature to publish a webpage or serve other web assets.

On Aug 31, 2016, we will discontinue serving content via googledrive.com/host/[id] and the webpages will not be accessible anymore.

As an alternative to web hosting in Drive, we recommend:

Blogger—An easy and free way to host websites.
Firebase Hosting— An alternative if you’re using the web-hosting feature to serve static webpages with items on Drive.
If you have additional questions or need assistance, please contact Google Support.

Sincerely,
The Google Apps Team

So what does this mean?
It means that any virtual tour you try to access from your usual Google Drive hosting links will either not work entirely, or just display the actual html instead of the page you're wanting to share as Google Drive is still a file hosting site.

What should you do now?
You should already be looking for a new way to host your virtual tours, there are many options out there it is up to you to find which suits your needs the best.
The newsletter offers one possible suggestion: Firebase Hosting. In our documentation there is also a short 'guide' to the use of Amazon Simple Storage Servers (Amazon S3).

We'll be looking for a simple (and hopefully free) solution to replace Google Drive in the Create a simple virtual tour tutorial.

Thank you for reading!
