Gyroscope causes wiggly images in Android

by pgielen » Wed Feb 19, 2014 1:48 pm

The gyroscope plugin, when included in a tour, makes the panorama wiggly on Android devices. The tour does respond to movement of the Android phone or tablet, but keeps wiggling even if the device is held still on a flat surface.

Obviously the plugin does not work with Android, which would be not such a big deal if it could recognize wether it is running on iPhone/iPad and activate itself accordingly, but now, I can not include it at all. Is there a solution?

What is your Android device for information please ?

You can have a look into all the xml files generated and search for "gyro" keyword. Add devices="iphone|ipad" to force gyro only on ipad and iphone on layers and plugins tag linked to gyroscope.

I have tried that. In the file index_skin.xml I changed the expression

<plugin name="gyroscope"
url="graphics/gyro.js"
keep="true"
devices="tablet|mobile"
...
To:
<plugin name="gyroscope"
url="graphics/gyro.js"
keep="true"
devices="iphone|ipad"
...

That seems to help prevent the activation of the gyroscope for my Android devices, but I did not have the chance to see if the gyroscope still works now on an iPhone or iPad. The tour in which I have tested this is located here: "http://virtualtours.nl/sluis" (which contains work in progress).

If this works, it would be something to implement in a next version of PtP. Or better still, the next version could have a new version of the gyroscope code that works for Android.

Google updated Chrome Browser for Android yesterday (February 26th). We’ve updated it on our Nexus 7 and tested on one of our own tours. It appears to have cleared up the gyroscope issues.

Chrome 33.0.1750.132
