Perfect image size to be used inside panotour pro?

by 3DCR » Mon Nov 23, 2015 6:24 pm

Hello everyone

I'm planning to use Panotour Pro to create VT's using 3ds max and V-Ray.
I did some testing, but wasn't to happy about the results. The original render in high quality came out very nice, but then inside the VT (using the Panotour Pro Trial version) they showed up really pixelated.
My first test was done using 2200 x 1100 px, then i tried it with 4000 x 2000 px, but there wasn't a big difference, except that my render time almost quadrupled :(
I use exr as the output with several passes inside and do the post production in after effects, then output as png.

Can anyone give me some advise what size would be suitable as render output and what image format should i use to import the 360's into panotour?

Obviously the goal is to put the VT's online, so loading time will be a major concern.

Thanks for any help

best

2200x1100 is pretty small. Usually people go for something along lines of 6000x3000 up to 12000x6000 if not more for high res tours.

You don't really need to worry about the loading time of your images if you build with multires, because it creates tons of small tiles of your images (granted, it takes up more space on the server) so that when viewing the tour you only need the tiles of the zoom level and where your view is, while the rest is loaded.

Hi Cliquetsy

thanks for your answer. This explains the pixelation.

Normally we create interactive presentations using Klynt, and as those are video files i'm used to 1080p sizes. So rendering a 4000 x 2000 images seemed huge to me :)

So i will try 6000 x 3000 then and go up the ladder if needed. Space on the server, is not an issue, we have plenty available ;)

What about the format? Will i get better results if i use psd or tif as import file? As those files will not be compressed, or would you say it makes no difference?

You could go for tiff or png, the final format of the tiles is jpg in any case.
Also don't optimise the image before import, Panotour does that during the tiles build and no point in optimising optimised images (unless you are intent on getting something ugly ;) )

Perfect, so i will use tif as import format.
I don't optimise the images, only need to do post production, meaning color corrections etc.

Thanks again for your advise, it definitely helped me a lot :)
