Possible to add floating text in the projection?

by byarsulik » Tue Nov 03, 2015 11:26 pm

I want to add white text inside the projection to imitate letters being in the picture. For example, here is a quick photoshop illustrating what I am trying to do. It is hard, however, to get it looking correct once inside the tour.

Hi.. Can't you just create a Path in Photoshop along the edge you want to follow and then add your text to it directly onto the pano..

Yeah I can try that, but I assumed that just flat text on a path on top of the distorted jpg would look weird when the projection is rendered spherically. I could be wrong though!

Yeah it's not correctly projecting in 3d space if I do just a path in photoshop.

I think my fix will have to be opening the image in After Effects, creating a text path in 3d space, and then rotating the letters on the path so that they sit correctly in the vertical space and exporting the image. Will come back tomorrow with results!

Yes... I have just tested it too.. Not good.. I would expect it to be better than that.. How about a round logo but just the text.. You will have to fiddle to find the right distance .. Just add text on an alpha .. Just a thought... But I do not think that will work either since the the logo might make a large part of the pano inactive to panning.. I think I am out of ideas.. There is probably an easy fix to this..

Why not a transparent image hotspot? For placement and such use the cube faces for no distortion?

Did you try.. For me it did not work.. But great minds think alike.. ;)

Destiny..

PS.... I also tried the Logo set too Nadir.. The Logo is in the foreground than the pano is on the background.. =(

This is a good point, I could definitely try that. Might take a couple tries to get the text stretched to the right size, but it could work. I probably try this too as well as the After Effects thing. Thanks for the input guys!

On another note, where do we give input on future additions of Panotour? I think being able to add text into the scene would be a great future to a great many!

Okay so the image hotspot was the route I had to take, and it looks just fine!! The only hard part is the fact that there isn't a preview of what the image looks like before the build.

Is it hard because of the placement?

It's hard only because it's almost like I'm guessing the size of the image, and it takes a couple guess and checks to get the text where it doesn't look horizontally or vertically stretched.

What about placing markers on a cube face and import the cube faces to make a panorama, then replace the panorama once it's placed?

Kinda like here but image editing/cutting since it's not the same "issue" ;) : viewtopic.php?f=91&t=28196&p=172304&hilit=cube+face#p172304

You can expand the window which make placement easier.. I did put in for a feature request a very long time ago on the positioning of hotspots but not sure if its on the To Do List.. I make my line of text too long so it did not look that good.. This has been an interesting post..

That's an interesting way of doing it. I've been having a separate issue recently, where I can't replace pano images because it is saying they are not equirectangular when they actually are. My images would be something like 8960x4480 which are the exact 2:1 ratio, but it errors. (Was replacing for off-topic reasons, but now seems on-topic with your new suggestion.)

That's strange.
Maybe post a bug report then?

Do you still have any two panoramas that had that issue? (original and replacer)

I haven't had to replace any recently since I'm just doing image hotspots for the text. I was photoshopping some things into the panos, and the replacing them before. I just thought it kind of strange.

If it happens again then file a bug report, with the images if you can, there might be a problem with the image information or something? That's the only problem I can see that could pose a problem.

Didn't see any previous reports for that issue in any case.

I'll make a note to do that. Was strange indeed. At one point an image was a certain width to where the other ratio ended up having to be a half pixel value, like 8955x4475.5 [Im throwing a number out there], so I chose a slightly smaller width so the height was a full pixel value and it had still given me the error.

Did anything changed? There is still no simple way of adding floating text or just popup text box on hover? :(

There are no text hotspots.

If you want to display text on hover use the hotspot's tooltips .
