Very slow upload speed

by stillstonevisions » Thu Nov 07, 2013 8:32 pm

Having failed to get PTP 2.0 to upload, I am using Dreamweaver after PTP 2.0 builds the files.

For my current project, my "build" folder contains 502 MB data from PTP2.0. But when I try to upload it all with Dreamweaver, it takes an awfully long time. I just checked my speed at two speedtest sites. They rate my upload speed at 11.27 - 11.59 Mbps. If my math serves me, this should be over 1 Megabyte per second transfer rate, so it should take in the ballpark of 500 seconds to upload all these files, which would be around 8 minutes, but yesterday it took 12 hours and then failed. Today it is still running after 7 hours.

Any idea why this is taking so long?

Thanks,
Paul

What sort of Net connection do you have that provides 11+ Mbps upload bandwidth?

You are uploading many small files, there is considerable overhead involved in doing that; compared to uploading a single large file.

It is cable with Comcast, referred to by them as the "BLast Internet" service. Yes, I understand about the many small files, more than 8 hours for 500 MB still seems excessive. The latest attempt did successfully complete a little while ago, after 8 hours.

Perhaps some other FTP program might be faster than Dreamweaver?

Possibly. Any particular suggestions? I used to use WSFTP, but that was when it was free. Now they want $695!

In fact upload is very long due to the quantity of files. Little but each file need call a connexion open/transfert/close into ftp program, so it's more long than few big files.
But 8-12 hours seems long for a 500Mb upload.

It's definitely the number of connections. Not sure if you can set Dreamweaver to do multiple/simultaneous uploads rather than one file at a time. If not, give Cyberduck a go. http://cyberduck.ch
