[Planned 1.3.1] Alpha Channel In 16 Bit Tiff

Got some great idea or a feature request? Post it here and discuss it. The most requested concepts are usually implemented, as Autopano Pro / Giga is very community driven.

[Planned 1.3.1] Alpha Channel In 16 Bit Tiff

by evogel99 » Mon Nov 20, 2006 8:44 pm

Not a bug, strictly speaking.

I brought this up before and don't think it was ever answered.

APP seems to be saving an alpha channel with TIFFs (16 bit). Some of my image apps cannot open this file.

Please allow me to specify whether or not I want an Alpha channel.

Thanks

Eric

In addition, when there is no alpha channel, as in a TIF created w/o one or a JPG which never has one, I would like a way to specify the color of the transparent areas, at least whether they are black or white. Right now they are always black.

I believe the alpha channel may be added by SmartBlend?

Yes, good remark. We have to improve this output alpha support. In fact, if the file format supports alpha channel we just put them in. It doesn't depend on the blender used.

The folks at Picture Window Pro (DL-C) were kind enough to examine a 16 bit TIFF file from APP. Compression was set to none.

Here is what they wrote

--------------------------------------------

Eric,

We have looked at the sample file that you sent. The file is compressed using run length encoding *RLE). This compression technique is not suited for most images (i.e it does not reduce files size) and is not currently supported by Picture Window. (RLE can save space for images like masks with a highpercentage of identicalpixels and that is probably why RLE is used when an alpha channel is included in the image.)

A workaround is to turn off compression, if that option is available in your software.

----------------------------------------------------------

Since I have already turned off compression, and am getting an alpha channel, I guess I am stuck on this one. All I really want is a 16 bit TIFF, straight up, no chaser.
