Coming from a film and television background, I've found the idea of working with control points very familiar from my experience with motion tracking. However, there is a good deal of motion tracking that requires the use of planar tracking rather than control points which often proves far more effective. I can't help but think the same approach would make a big difference setting up panos. Particularly in situations like I've just been working on where you have balconies with distant views and railings that are close to camera.
