AVP 2.3 skipping/duplicating frames on output video

by OpusMcN » Tue Mar 01, 2016 2:57 am

Hi,

I'm stitching panos from 5 GoPro sessions, filmed at 1280x960, 59.94Hz. Previewing the panorama frame by frame in AVP I'm seeing good results, but when I render the video I'm seeing duplicated and skipped frames in the result.

It looks like the previous frame is being pulled from the camera videos, but the stabilization from the correct frame is being applied. This means the frame isn't an exact duplicate as the stabilization changes, but the individual frames of the pano are duplicates of the previous frames. Most of the time the 5 cameras stay in sync (so all 5 images are duplicates of the previous frame) but occasionally 1 or more will get out of sync, so you see either one camera lag behind or move ahead of the other 4. I've seen this happen on both MP4 movie exports and individual JPEG frames.

I've been back and examined the original footage, and it appears fine for all cameras.

Attached is a zip file with 18 consecutive rendered frames of jpeg export. You can see examples of both the dropped frames (eg: compare frames 463 and 464) and cameras getting out of sync (eg: compare frames 473 and 474). I can step through the preview of that section frame by frame in AVP and all the frames appear correct in the preview.

The original videos for this shot are about 5500 frames long, and I'm rendering out a short segment or 500 frames starting at around frame 2540.

I'm not seeing it on all the shots from this job, but it's occurring often enough to be a real problem. Once this footage is viewed in a GearVR headset the missed frames are really horrible to watch.

System details :
Windows 7, Geforce GTX 980 graphics card, AVP Pro 2.3.0

Any suggestions how to get around this would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Craig.

Hi Craig,

Can you try switching your GPU mode (synchrone / asynchrone) in the preferences?

Thanks,

Martin

Thanks Martin,

That seems like it's the problem. It was on asynchronous, switching to synchronous looks good. A quick test of that shot looks fine, I'm re-rendering the entire job now to make sure it's all good. Render speed only took a small hit doing this (15fps down to 13fps) so I'll definitely leave it set to synchronous in the future.

Cheers,

Craig.

Hi Martin,

I've rendered the entire job with the GPU set to synchronous, and unfortunately the results are much better, but still not 100%. It's gone from several glitches per second down to one every few seconds. While better, it's still not good enough for a final product, particularly in something the the GearVR where frame rate problems are very obvious.

I've rendered some shots on the CPU only and they look 100% correct, but the render times really start to hurt doing that (from 12-15 fps down to 0.25 fps, about 50x longer to render).

Anything else I should try with the GPU rendering? I can resort to overnight batch renders for the final product, but I'd prefer not to :)

Cheers,

Craig.

I just want to add that I have been seeing this same behavior in my renders, with duplicated frames in one or more cameras used in a stitch. I just started noticing this recently.
Eagerly looking forward to a fix for this since this is critically impacting workflows and as the previous poster mentioned, switching to CPU only rendering would be a big hit.

Hi all :)
As a temporary work around it seems that rendering your 2.3 kava on an older version (i've tried 2.2.0) seems to be working fine.
Isn't ideal but until the bug is fixed it beats CPU only renders :)

@ Craig: Can you try rendering with 2.2 to see if your bug is linked to the version upgrade?

@ mattom1: what are your input / output settings?

Thanks,

Martin

Hi Martin,

Yes, it appears rendering in 2.2 (set to synchronous) gets the correct result. Looks like something crept in during the 2.3 update?

Cheers,

Craig.

i have 4 input cameras, h.264 mp4, 3840x2160 each and am outputing at 5600x2800 Gopro cineform MOV.
I am on a Windows 7 PC with Nvidia 980 Ti card.

I dont seem to encounter this issue when rendering from a Mac.
Thanks for the assist.

Re: AVP 2.3 skipping/duplicating frames on output video

I'm experiencing the same intermittent frame skipping/duplicating.

Using anywhere from 4/5/6 cameras (each at 1920x1440 h264 mp4) to output various sizes of Cineform MOV High video files. AVP 2.3 (tried sync and async, sync does it less frequently and in different places) running on Windows 7 and NVIDIA Titan X.

I don't experience it in AVP 2.2 but am also forced to export out img sequences instead of Cineform files. No bueno. Please fix!!

I'm stuck rendering in 2.2 at the moment, the 2.3 output to mp4 just isn't usable for any fast moving footage. A fix to this is pretty important, it's definitely a bug that's been introduced in the 2.3 update.

I had a project which had similar behaviour, I worked on it several days for trying to understand the issue.

It could sound like a joke but after updating my nvidia driver released today I can't reproduce my syncrhonization issue in AVP 2.3.2.

Tell us if it's the same for your projects.

Can someone post a link to download 2.2?

With all the rendering problems in Autopano Video Pro 2.3 it's impossible to deliver professional work.
