AVP 2.2.2 renders black (continued)

by jboss » Tue Oct 27, 2015 9:45 am

Hi,

Since the original topic about AVP 2.2.2 (http://www.kolor.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=28566) is locked, I have to start a new thread, because for me it is not solved.

I have installed all Windows 8.1 updates, except the ones for upgrading to Windows 10 because I do not want to upgrade to Windows 10. AVP 2.2.2 still renders a black mp4 with only sound.
I opened the project in AVP 2.0.2 and it renders fine.

Thanks.

Hi,

So first the "original" topic was closed because it's note as "solved", have you tried the solution indicated there? (it seems like it's related to some dll on windows).

I downloaded your kava file, and rendered it (I used my videos since I do not have access to yours) and it renders fine.

So here is a few hint to help you solve your issue :

-> Is this specific to this project? (i.e you are able to render other kava files without any trouble)
-> Does your input videos have something specific like pro res or cineform format for instance? (what is your FPS?)
-> Did you build this kava file with AVP 2.2.2 or with a prior version?
-> What happens if you try to stitch those video from scratch in AVP 2.2.2 : does this render fine?

Let us know,

Best,

Claire

Hi,

The original solution was somewhat vague (it does not mention which dll was broken, it just said apply Windows 10 update to 8.1), and since I do not want to upgrade all the way to Windows 10 I followed it as best as I could by installing all Windows 8.1 udates.

I did notice a remark there that the video played fine on a phone so I tried that and that works for my video as well. That suggests that there is some problem with the MP4 codec that Windows doesn't understand. Perhaps a new version that is intended for Windows 10 and does not work in Windows 8.1 (that would suggest why upgrading to Windows 10 solved the problem for the original question).

I tried rendering a project with older files that have worked fine in AVP 2.0.2. They also open black. The rendering happens on the GPU, so that should not be an issue either.

I re-installed AVP 2.2.1 and created the project from scratch again and that also opens as black. Did the same with the old videos in AVP 2.2.1 and they also open black.

I finally tried both projects from scratch in AVP 2.0.2 and both render and open fine. So it really looks ike something changed between 2.0.2 and 2.2.1/2.2.2.

For all renders I used preset H.264 Auto (HD or 4K UHDTV) with its default settings.

Hope this helps.
Joost

Hi Joost,

Can you tell me on which players your video appears black?
* Kolor Eyes?
* Windows Player?
* VLC?
...

What is the FPS of your output video?

Best,

Claire

Hi Claire,

It is black in Kolor Eyes Desktop 1.5, Kolor Eyes Desktop 1.4 and Windows Media Player.
It is fine in VLC player, Freemake Video Converter, GoPro Studio.

Framerate is 25 fps.

I uploaded the video on my website, so you can try it out yourself: http://www.vrbeelding.nl/downloads/Film2_V01.mp4

Hope this helps.

Hi,

So I think that as default Kolor Eyes uses the windows media player backend to play your video. You can change the plugin that Kolor Eyes uses to play your video. Set it to VLC for instance and it should work like a charm.

(See the documentation for more info on that : http://www.kolor.com/wiki-en/action/vie ... o_decoding )

The fact that windows plays your video black seems to be a limitation of their player. If you want more info you can post or read post on the Kolor Eyes Desktop forum.

(EDIT : also it plays fine and the default OSX player (quicktime)).

Best,

Claire

Hi Guys,

Quick update on that,

Did you render your videos in AVP using NTSC or PAL?
If you did PAL, try NTSC and let us know if Windows Media Player can read your video.

Hope this helps,

Claire

Hi Claire,

My original renders were indeed PAL. I tried NTSC, but made a mistake that might help anyway :-)

I first used NTSC with a small resolution (1920x960) and that worked fine. But then I realised you should never change two variables at the same time when testing, so I tried NTSC with UHDTV (3840x1920) and that did not work in WMP. Then a final test with PAL @ 1920x960 and that also works fine in WMP.

So it looks like maybe the resolution is the problem.

Hope this helps,
Joost

Hi,

But if you play your rendered video in another player than Kolor Eyes (i.e quicktime, vlc...) does it shows up the right way?
Also did you try rendering with the new stable version aka 2.3 ?

Best,

Claire
