GoPro alternative cameras

by tomuk007 » Thu Apr 23, 2015 4:07 pm

Has anyone got any experience of using alternative cameras to GoPro for 360 degree video acquisition?

I've had a look at an SJ4000, Veho Muvi K2, now looking at a Xiaomi Yi as an option.

A week after the Kolor GoPro hookup i best not shout too loud... but i can report with reasonable confidence that a Yi would probably work for 360. Did a 90 degree 4 way stitch in video today and it seems happy. 1 cam, four positions no sync, 90deg no nadir/no zenith. 960p.
The Yi seems reasonable value for £50, and you would be better off with shiny GoPro's -> better lens, more options, more stable. However my thinking is a few Yi's and a plastic mount might be a good place to learn for some folks. The Yi aint too stable, and getting mp4 off it was tricky but just thought i'd share incase anyone else wants to give them a try. Hopefully Kolor/GoPro will not lock their software down to one cam.Iit's fun to experiment with different optics/equipment.

Hi,
i'm still doing some tests with 2 kodak sp360 back to back. You need before stich all together prepare a right templates with autopano but the result at the moment is fine.
I think, anyway , that a good result for a video 360 will be reach in the next couple of years. At the moment i didn't see any good video and doesn't depend of the skills of the operatores but depende of the quality of the hardware and software used.
A normal 2D panorama 360 has reached a really high level of quality for a video 360 we need to give time....
Nikon D810, Nikkor 16mm fisheye,20mm, 50mm, 85mm, Amarula Bushman Tripod, Gobi panoramic Head, Windows 10/64bit, Adobe Photoshop CC 2018, Lightroom Classic CC 2018, APG 4.4.1, PTP 2.5.11

2 cams with a good fish eye seems a pretty good thing to try. Saves stitching/less processing! I'd be keen to see what you get off that Kodak. Hopefully i can compare with a 2 cam shot in few weeks when i've put some stuff together!
