Which Graphics card is best Gtx 980 or Titan?

by Rog » Tue Nov 11, 2014 4:29 am

Hello All,

I am currently looking to buy a new graphics card.
All reviews state that the newly released GTX980 has a more powerful GPU
than the Titan whilst being significantly cheaper and uses less power.
The GTX980 is limited to 4GB of RAM compared to the Titans 6GB or more,
and has less CUDA cores (2048 vs 2880)

I know that most reviews are written from a gaming perspective, but I am wondering
which is best for stitching.

Regards Rog.

Hi Rog,

The GPU memory size is not important. You should go with the GTX 980 and do not forget that the CPU and the storage are also very important.

It's better to have a good equilibrium between the different components:
- the CPU is used to decode all the input videos
- the GPU is used for the stitching
- the drives a quite solicited because you are reading several videos in parallel.

Hope that helps,

Martin

Thanks, currently looking at a second hand system with 2 graphics cards, GTX 780 Ti which have 3GB of graphics RAM each.
I have been reading plenty of info about graphics cards and APV but I am still not clear if dual cards are supported.

Also if I was to use only 1 of these cards and graphics RAM is not important, I would not be disadvantaged by having only 3GB of graphics RAM?

There is currently no dual cards support. 3 GB are enough for a workstation.

Cheers,

Martin

We found out that AMD's firepro are really good too. The best GPU we tested yet was the W700 from macpro ( which is a derived gpu from AMD W8000 ).

gtx Titan II / Titan X is rumored (12GB)
the gtx 990 is also rumored to come in near future. (8GB)

Speed is not only about the graphics card.... Here are some tests i ran these days with AVP and APG on my Windows 7 system, which I have updated this week by upgrading the cpu from an old Intel i5-750@2.67GHz (4 cores) to a i7 4790K@4GHz (4 cores, 8 threads). This resulted in a dramatic speed increase:

With AVP:
- Motion syncing 4 files made with the Qbic rig: from 1m35 to 0m35 (2.8x as fast).
- Detecting horizon motion: from 5m46 to 1m00 (5.8x as fast).
- Rendering: from 5m54 / 1.46fps to 1m04 / 8.1fps (5.5x as fast).

BTW I wanted to make some tests with the benchmark files that are provided on Kolor.com, but AVP 2.0 does not read the Kava files properly.

With APG:
- Detecting 18 bracketed 24MP NEF files: from 7m31 to 1m30 (5x as fast).
- Rendering the result: from 6m47 to 1m34 (4.3x as fast).

I hoped to stretch the speed even more by adding a second SSD as a scratch disk for APG, PtP and AVP (the first SSD has the OS, program files and source images on it). This, however, led to marginal speed increases of not more than 0 to 8%.

For the GPU, I already had GTX750 ti (2GB) card. Rendering without it in Autopano Video is about 200x as slow as in AVP, so the investment in the Pro version gave me the biggest speed increase of all :-)

Has this changed yet, or is there a plan to support Sli and multiple cards?

could you explain that a bit more, how a dual gpu machine with 2x 6 core cpu's and 64GB ram (all spec'd well above any other benchmark test) is indicative any anything real?

Do you have any current benchmarks using latest versions of AVP and similar hardware platforms?

No sorry, we don't have accurate benchmarking done recently.

On the performance topic:
- Support dual gpu for rendering ? Yes, it is on the roadmap, but not high on the list. In fact, people are first asking for network rendering. So, we'll look around that topic first.
- APG is not yes GPU accelerated in rendering, but is uses CPU cleverly. More core, more speed ( if the disk I/O is not the bottleneck )
- AVP is GPU accelerated in several areas, motion stabilization, rendering. That's doesn't mean that is is still really linked to CPU power. Better CPU, faster software. That's a general rule.

I am looking into building a dual e5 system similar specs to a Mac Pro 2013 but running Windows and using a GTX 980. Was hoping to get some benchmark guidance before spending that much cash.
