Panoshoot with Bracketing

PostPosted: Thu Nov 07, 2013 11:29 am

Someone have experienced problems stitching a session shooted with bracketing using panoshoot + panogear?

For me, the shooting runs okay, but when i try to stitch the results via Papywizard plugin, in the detection phase, Autopano Giga hangs and exit the program.

If anyone succeed, is possible to post the resulting xml to compare with mine?

Thanks

I have done it without XML, I'll see if I have time to test it tomorrow with XML and let you know.

This issue was brought to our attention last week. The user sent us their images and an XML file. We have tried several ways to determine what the issue is but this is going to require some coordination with Kolor.

Could you email us your XML file to help us get to the bottom of this issue?

Do you want to post your XML file here so we can take a look at it?

Hi.... this is my xml file.... If you need it, i can try with other configurations to provide you other samples....

Ask me the tests you want and i'll do it.... For me is an important issue, i'm changing from Epic Pro to panogear, and for the moment, panogear+panoshoot is not useful at all....

I'd like to see a smaller example - say a 4x4 bracketed x3 matrix of low res images and accompanying XML - available for download as ZIP file..

That should be enough for testing/investigation.
For me is an important issue, i'm changing from Epic Pro to Panogear,

I'm interested in why you are changing? What is it that you hope to be able to do with Panogear+Panoshoot that you cannot do with the Epic Pro?

I'm shooting hi-res HDR 360*180 panos. The main reason is that Epic pro doesn't allow a non regular shooting patern (less shots near zenit-nadir). Other main reason is having the xml file, ho help stitching skyes and some areas without good stitching points.
Today I'll send the test patern you asked.

True - the Gigapan Epic series were not really ever designed for shooting 360x180 panos.

Other main reason is having the xml file, ho help stitching skies and some areas without good stitching points.

Understood.

Today I'll send the test pattern you asked.

Thanks.

Sorry for jumping in, but, is there some sort of calculator or generator I could use to make my own picpoints for 270X180 panos?

Unfortunately Panoshoot doesn't use the Papywizard custom preset format but you could use a Papywizard orientated custom preset generator and transpose the data to a Panoshoot format I suppose.

Could you recommend on one such tool? (I haven't worked with papywizard)

You could try this one - it's for 360x180 - and then crop on the H axis after stitching.

The Papywizard custom preset format is described on this page:

http://www.papywizard.org/wiki/UserGuideSvn

You can open custom preset XML files with any text editor.

Initial test results ...using APG 3.0.8 and 2.6.4 64-bit on Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit...

As you say it crashes using the Papywizard Import wizard with APG 3.0.8.

It doesn't crash with APG 2.6.4 but the result is pretty awful: see screenshot below.

This suggests to me that the issue may be related to the fact that Panoshoot XML data files are not fully complaint with the standard defined for Papywizard XML data files.

More results....

Stitching without using Papywizard Import wizard works with APG 3.0.8.

Yet more results...

Stitching works using APG 2.6.4 without the Papywizard Import wizard, although unlike 3.0.8 you will have to create the stacks manually.

More results...

I edited the panoshhot XML data file to make it fully papywiozard complainat and now it no longer crashes in APG 3.0.8 when using the Papywizard Import wizard - although the stitch result is still not good: see screenshot below.

This seems to confirm that part of the problem is that the Panoshoot XML data file is not Papywizard compliant.

Here is the modified XML file, now Papywizard compliant - you need to save it with UTF-8 encoding (Windows Notepad can do this).

On my point of view, there are 2 possible solutions....

1- Develop an import plugin for panoshoot for Autopano (perhaps is the better solution).

2- Make panoshoot xml files papywizard compliant (maybe a software to make it automatic).

If not, what are the sense of the xml files on panoshoot? Having this xml files is one of the strong points of panogear+panoshoot.

What is your opinion?

I had a long 'debate' with Panoshoot developers on this issue when Panoshoot was first launched.

My view is (and always has been) that it would probably be better for Panoshoot and Kolor to work to develop a new Panoshoot Import wizard because Panoshoot developers seem to reject the idea of making Panoshoot fully compliant with the standard definitions for Papywizard XML Data files and Custom preset files (which Panoshoot calls PicPoint files I believe).

.............

The Seitz VRDrive generates XML format data files too. Initially users were advised to use the Papywizard Import wizard with these files, but Seitz and Kolor later introduced a dedicated Import wizard for that robotic head.

.............

I was quite closely involved with the development of Papywizard and PandroidWiz, panoramic photography control software for the Panogear/Merlin mount.

Papywizard runs on Windows, Nokia N800 and N810 Internet tablets, Mac OSX, and Linux but it is longer being actively developed.

PandroidWiz offers a subset of Papywizard functionality, producing Papywizard Compliant XML data files, and runs on Android platforms.
..............

The T&C Touch Controller for the Panogear/Merlin mount also generates XML data files that can be used with the Papywizard Import wizard (as does the Panoneed robotic mount).

So, you are sugesting investing in some device papywizard compatible, and forget about panoshoot for the moment?

Sincerly, I bought panoshoot because is the only option available in kolor website, and I trust that is a finished and perfect working product.... and the module looks more like an unfinished product, just great perspectives (not so good news for kolor guys....).

I don't want to spend more money obviusly, but I have work to do, not sure if I can wait until all this problems where solved...

The T&C Touch Controller is long established and users report that it is very reliable.

http://www.typeandcolour.de/index.php?ln=en&tp=hhc_home

It used to be marketed by Kolor before they switched to marketing the Panoshoot device.

I don't have one, so I have no vested interest in this case.

Well, after 1 month since I opened this discusion, my conclusions are that exist 2 possibilities:

1) Kolor + panoshoot develop an import pluguin.

2) Panoshoot make his xml papywizard compatible.

My news from kolor are that this wizard is not scheduled for the moment....

Panoshoot is not hands on doing his XML compatible as far as I know....

For the moment we are in a deadlock. The only possibility is not using XML file.

I'm not very satisfied with this situation. I asked panoshoot and kolor, and I haven't a satisfactory answer for the moment.

Thanks to mediavets for his interest and help!
