I suppose your Borrego Badlands pano is a 5 x 5 pano (...or about, I'm embarrassed as 27 is a prime number!) and you say it was shot using a 50 mm lens. The topmost row (sky with not any crisp feature) looks more difficult to stitch than the bottom right part of Tim's pano (sea Waves, long shutter times.)
For panos like Tim's one (single row) I would use an accurately leveled tripod.
For such a large sky part like in your multi-row pano, I'm afraid this would not be enough...
