6,2 Gigapixel of St. Peter´s Church in Vienna

by julian kalmar » Tue Oct 06, 2009 4:37 pm

A new era of VR has began. Still there are some parts of the fresko and some symbols in the curch, no one knows the meaning of. Together with a scientist who is specialised in analysing such freskos, all Hs will be named in about half a year.

Wow, I'm speechless... What an amazing level of detail, and what a fabulous experience. The way the pano rotates as you zoom in to a specific part is smart.

Congratulations with this magnificent panorama!!

Care to share some technical details?

Unfortunately the (i)nfo boxes pop up as white rectangles. If there is any text in them, I can't see it. Possible that the text color is taken from the brower's or window manager's default, but the background is hard-coded white, so if I use a dark color theme and my font is white, the flash will use a white font and a hard-coded white background.

sorry for writing in french...

Look. There's a rhythmic ceremonial ritual coming up !

Absolutely wonderful : ) This is such a high quality image. I don't think I would have the patience for capturing this type of image. Did you avoid focus bracketing by using f14? I know that you had discussed exposure bracketing, white balance bracketing (for mixed light, other pano), and focus bracketing ( Tokyo pano ). Have you ever experimented with enfuse or tufuse instead of the other HDR programs?

It's a great work... Just a question : how do you manage to put 6,2 Mégapixels on your server ?

When I put only 30 Méga-octets (ridiculous weight...) it takes someting about 15/20 minutes through FTP !

Thank you for your reply,

the most images underneath the fresko I had to take two times with different focusing points. Only for the altar area I had to take three different focusing points ( and each image with 6 different exposures, which means 18 images to get one good image)
As I don´t like the HDR effect I ´m always blending the exposures manually in PS.
It´s not possible to use enfuse or tufuse in such work. They don´t align the images and as you are tuching the camera when you are changing the focus and the exposure, the images are never perfect aligned.
Anyhow I think that the results of those programs are much better then the results of HDR programs but still not as good as manual blending.
The results always looks flat. With manual blending I can achiev much bettter results.

Hi,

Could you tell us more ? A few hours or a few days in order to upload your files ?
Do you have your OWN server or are you using provider's services ?
Don't worry, we are not ready to do so gigantic files, it's just for feminine curiosity

I think uploading this image took about 5 hours.
No, I do not have my own server, I´m using a "normal" provider.
