SVG icons for retina screens?

by pbetancourt » Sun Oct 19, 2014 10:13 pm

Is there a way to get svg icons instead of pngs on the skin?
On retina screens, all the icons look pixelated.
Thanks!

Pablo

Does that mean all PNG's are pixelated.. How about 72dpi JPG's? As you are probably aware Apple released its new iMac with Retina on Friday...

I am saving up for a new iMac but not so sure about the Retina display.. I will wait to read about any issues.. I find my current iMac to be great.. Better than most PC monitors..

both pngs and jpgs are bit images, svg are vectors instead.
An intermediate solution is to have two different sizes of icons, an load one or other depending on the screen

Just to give a short comment that could help you.

Adobe is not using svg file for HiRes displays (it's the name of the super resolution display for computer).
Instead they use (for example with Muse) a double size images with trigger to use one of them according to the monitor size detected.
And we have tried with 4K monitors and it works very well and not only for icons for for all pictures.

Sincerely.

Morgan

But how do we do that inside PP2? I mean, having two different sizes for icons?
In the meantime I was trying svgs inside my skin (You have to force the program to look for "All files" when selecting the icon) and they seem to be working Ok. But need to test it online and through different browsers.

I personally would try the vector road.. The Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) would be ok, but Photoshop will not support Vector or any other Adobe as far as I know. So you will need a software app to create SVG Vector Graphics. What software are you using to create SVG Vector graphics. The question is.. Will PTP support vector graphics in any format. If it could then size will not matter if it does...

@ Morgon.. I think you are referring to SVGA, for Display.. ;)

Photoshop supports and create vector graphics. But i believe that you cannot export them as svgs. So I'm using illustrator to do it. PTP allows you to choose an svg file, you just have to select "all files" while choosing them

They look great, but I'm not sure if they really are svgs, or PTP converts them into pngs. What is important for me is that on retina screens they look OK now.

I think PTP probably converted them.. Can you check your folders for those files..

I will play my end.. I guess if the graphics look ok on Retina Display your end then it doesn't matter...

Really interesting what you have done..

Interesting... If you zoom in on one of the graphics, does it still look sharp...

Hi.. I have tried Illustrator, InDesign etc and still cannot save as in the SVG format.. Strange you can.. What version are you using... I would doubt yours is a true SVG format graphic.. Its based on XML...
