That it is only when back from an unknown territory with the precise map they were in charge to establish that explorers can know the size of the crew and the amount of furnitures they should have taken, the duration of the trip and the kind of discoveries they should have anticipated is both obvious and unacceptable. As a result the wisest among them shamelessly wait for the return of one or more competitors before they leave.
Interestingly, from an English as first language point of view, Edge@51's comments are not harsh and do express the "ton humouristique" that I think he was after. My French is not adequate to put the idiom into his native tongue, but I think his meaning came across well.
Yes, 'What a shame' has very much the same meaning/connotation as 'What a pity' in colloquial English - it seems it doesn't when translated to French. So Edge's English is in fact rather good and his comments would not be perceived as harshly critical by native English speakers.
