New Merlin GOTO with built-in camera shutter control

by Apagador » Tue Mar 30, 2010 1:26 pm

Long story short I ordered the GOTO version of the mount since I have a telescope that fits it and there seems to be a Bluetooth device with the camera shutter control available. Anyway I received my Merlin mount yesterday and there is a snap port that looks to be 2.5mm stereo plug.
Does this mean that the new GOTO versions have a camera control port or am I missing something? I don't have a bluetooth dongle yet so I can't test the port to see if it's working. Is the missing 2.5mm jack the only difference between the GOTO version and the nonGOTO that everyone seems to be using (well the GOTO function is a difference too, but that's pretty obvious ;)

Assuming that the snap port works I should just get the "normal" version of the bluetooth dongle and not the more expensive version with the camera control option? I didn't get a 2.5mm to 2.5mm cable with my mount so I should just buy a 2.5mm male to 2.5mm male extension cable for camera control?

I don't have a DSLR camera, but I'm going to buy the Canon EOS 550D. Measuring from a picture the height from the bottom of the camera to the middle of the lense seems to be 37,5mm so it should be close to ideal?

afaik it is not sure until now if the goto version is only missing the wiring to the the shutter plug.

it would be very helpful if you could open the housing and post a pic of the internal controller.

to open it you have to unscrew first the bottom black plate around the tripod mount, two little screws are hidden behind, the other two are just a little bit below the crown.

look here for an inside view:

Not really sure what you need to see. Does this help? The mount is still open so I can take more pictures if needed.

so it is a Synta MC001, then it must have the shutter connector

but I don't know if there is a difference in the firmware version between goto and non goto version

the Papywizard logfile will show the firmware version

Hello Apagador,

If you have the Goto Version, you have also the "big" hand-controler with the screen and you don't need to have the PC connected !

If this is the case:

- Connect the Handcontroler to the mount.

- Switch the power "on"

- Let go-on the normal start-up procedure

- When done,
From the Main Menu , choose "Utility Function" and "Shown Information" , this will give you several informations where you will find:
"Version": Displays the Hand Controller Firmware, Database, Hand Controller Hardware, and Motor Controller. (Motor Controller version only displays if the controller is connected to the mount).
Use the scroll buttons to toggle through the list."
Report your "version number" in the forum and we will see if it is the correct one or it is one who should be upgraded !

Normally there is no specific Firmware for the Non Goto or the Goto Versions ! ;)

The 2 mounts are indentically the same but for marketing reasons "some differences are artificially created" ...
This is why the "Goto" version of the mount don't have normally the "remote release cable in place" !

If you buy the "0riginal brand of the non-goto mount" ... SKY-WATCHER you have the possibility in certains countries to buy the "Goto" hand controler separatelly, in this case you get a "Goto" Sky-Watcher mount with "camera remote release" installed !

Stupid, isn't ... NO you are stupid customers !!!

so bad news and good news

bad: wrong misbehaving firmware, you need to update to 2.06.81
good: you need only the missing wires to connect the shutter release

Apagador

"Chance" !
According the picture of your board, you have a "camera remote control" installed ! you just need the right cable to connect in function of your camera ... see the FAQ's here:
http://www.autopano.net/wiki-en/action/view/PapyMerlin_FAQ#Camera_remote_control (Hahnel system)

"pas de chance" !
The Motor Controller Ver.02.05.81 isn't the good one ....
You should upgrade !

Normally with the mount, you have got a "serial cable connector" for connecting the hand controler to a PC ???

So now I just need to find out how to update the firmware. I hope that the bad news part isn't all that big of a deal.. Not really all that experienced with these firmware updates.

I did get a cable to connect the hand controller to my PC.

So I guess I just need to follow these instructions:
http://www.papymerlin.com/app/download/1787653116/Goto+mount+procedure+How+to+update+the+firmware+of+the+motors+controler.pdf ?

I have an old laptop with the needed connector so I should be ok..

Well Apagador,

Another chance !

You just need the Firmware uploader and the new firmware ...
I have assembled all the necessery informations and stufs for the upgarde on my web site :
http://www.papymerlin.com/merlin-firmware-upgrade/

Probably you must buy also a "USB/RS232" convertor for you PC (Keyspan or other)

Good luck ...

And come back for giving news when done !!!

With the "USB/RS232" convertor you will be able also to run Papywizard with your PC connected to your mount without BT module ...

Now it reports Motor Controller Version as 02.06.81
So now I should be all set? Can I control the mount with papywizard using the supplied cable?

The Firmware is the right version now !

And YES, you can use the "serial" cable connected between the Hand controler and the computer for controling the Mount via Papywizard !
In PapyWizard you must use the serial plug-in, This is described here:
http://www.autopano.net/wiki-en/images-en/d/d8/Merlin_2_-_wo_ist_Merlin_-_connecting_Merlin_360und180.pdf
except that you should not care for the BT (you dont have !), just enter the COM port number of your cable in Papywizard (I.E. under the form of "COM3") and connect ...

Good luck

I connected the serial cable to the hand controller and I can't figure out how to make the mount work with papywizard. When I tell Papywizard to connect to the mount it just says Connecting to real hardware... and nothing else happens no matter how long I wait. In the configuration I told Papywizard to connect using serial. In what mode should the hand controller be?

Keep pressing enter after initialization. choose No for alignment.
Then press "3/Utility" button. Push ^ button (right of 0/ID).
You'll see PC Direct mode shown on LCD.
Enter

Edit. Actually it's in the user manual.

there is a pitfall:
either you enter the comport by number, then you must enter COMn - 1: COM3 = 2, COM4 = 3 ...
or you enter the full string: "COM3"

I was trying it in the PC Direct mode but it didn't work. I think that my COM port is number 1 and with that it's not working. I guess I'll just try the other COM ports aswell :) Thank you very much for all the help.

What Papywizard version are you using? I strongly suggest you use the latest dev release, 2.1.16. Forget the 2.0.0, which has a bad threading issue...

Ok. I uninstalled 2.0.0 and installed 2.1.16. The new version seems to work better since with it I get atleast an error message. When I try to use serial port 1 or 3+ it tells me that it can't connect to anything. If I use serial port 2 then it can Connect to all 3 things but fails to Init. Hand controller is in PC Direct mode.

You think?

What OS are you using? Surely you can know the number of your COM port?

Is it a real serial port or are you using a USB-serial convertor?
