PapyWizard and Ubuntu

Hi there gang, great project you have going here.

First of all I will explain a little what I will be working on with this project, I am doing my BA in Interaction Design and got interested in trying to capture "pieces of time in space". I look forward to get down into this and I am trying to order a Merlin from the UK as we speak. (some postal request info needed) I have as well ordered a a BlueSMiRF Silver to hook up to it to connect. Hopefully I will get that in the next 2 weeks.

I have been looking around for some used Nokia N800 or N810 to use in this project. I have however been looking more into getting a eeePC and run Ubuntu on it. So I can use that device for something else then this project as well. As well the eeePC will most likely be a little cheaper then the Nokia in the end.

I however have been very excited about the whole Mac implementations as I am a Mac only user, and have seen iPhone talks here on more then one occasion, I do understand that there are many problems with the whole iPhone so I am not even going to mention that more for now.

What I have been doing now is I got the

Papywizard.app.zip -- MacOS 10.5 binary (more or less release 1.9.6)

and that seems to run fine, as far as I can see in the forum it does not work with the device as of now (bluetooth), I cant try as I have not made it yet.

So

I installed Ubuntu with VmWare and have that up and running on my Mac, fine enough I don't have that much experience with Linux but a little. So what I did was I tried to follow the Wiki and tried to install the program. Like so, open Terminal and go to the right folder and type in.

$ sudo python setup.py install --prefix=/usr/local

I can see the application is there but I am not able to open it. usr/local/share/applications. as well it is under applications and graphic in the head menu, nothing happens when I click it.

Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

As I would be very interested to get it running on a eeePC. As well I cant try anything with a Nokia device as I will hold a little with buying one of them.

What Papywizard version did you download? Can you try to run:

$ papywizard.sh

from your shell? What is the error?

Just curious, why do you want to buy a Merlin from UK ?
Is it cheaper than from Teleskop Austria ?

I run papywizard on my eeepc running easy peasy (an ubuntu variant for netbooks). You seem to have installed it correctly. Just do as Frédéric said and type papywizard.sh from the terminal. It runs really well on my eeepc and the battery life is very agreeable.

If I may slip in an iPhone news item, Apple has just released the new SDK for os 3.0 which opens up the bluetooth interface. Now I know the iphone won't run python (will it?), but it is one step closer to papywizard on the iphone, although that would require a rewrite in objective C and that doesn't sound too fun :).

I ran it on Ubuntu no problems launching when I d/led the source and just ran it from the command prompt. The only real problem I ran into was configuring the bluetooth adaptor to use a serial port...wasn't a big deal yet so I haven't asked if anyone has any suggestions while the topic is open though. I'm probably going with a netbook as well so will be needing to do it once I order. At the time was just trying to so it if was a windows issue when the bluetooth chip was giving me problems.

I am probably doing something completely wrong here due to lack and rusty knowledge about Ubuntu haven't used it in such a long time.

I downloaded both
Papywizard 2.0.0 -- Source (ChangeLog)
and
Papywizard svn -- Source (ChangeLog)
to give a try.

Just as an additional question on the side regarding the Mac version of the program, how is that going? Are there any updates coming this way or any information on complying a own version when updates are coming, instead having to wait for someone to do it.

I did end up trying to place an order with Teleskop Austria. I am waiting for a reply from them. I do have to say that got to be one of the worst online user experiences I have ever seen and been through. They need to do some serious changes.

Just a quick note regarding the eeePC, I am still going to hold buying one as I will just try out with Ubuntu on my Mac for starters. The question is.

How did you add bluetooth to the computer, are you using a dongle or did you do some kind of hacking to get it internal into the computer, please share info regarding this. And ether way what did you buy?

Yes keep me in the loop about your findings, or if anyone has a simple solution regarding this.

On the eeepc, I don't use bluetooth. I use the FTDI usb to serial converter and a custom end to plug into the merlin. The $20 price tag seemed quite a bit better than the $70+ price tag so I can't give you any help on the bluetooth situation, sorry. Hope all else works out for you.

Ahh now it works(I thought I had installed the qt4 already), now hardware wise I just need to wait for the Merlin to start testing hardware, Software runs just fine. 2.0.0 does. The Trunk-r1638 does not however.

Thanks for your help, I will surly ask for some more a little later on.

Hi there again.

I just received my Merlin, I had already made the BlueSMIRF with 12v to 5v using a mobile phone charger.

I am however unable to connect to it using Papywizard 2.0.0. I am getting the red light on the BlueSMIRF board.

I get this error.

More details on this error, I do not understand what a stylesheet has to do with bluetooth.

This is what I get in the bluetooth manager in Ubuntu, So I can see it thats for sure.

I am runnning Ubuntu with VmWare on a Mac with Leopard if that changes anything.

EDIT: are there any changes I need to do to bluetooth/serial settings before I can get this to work?

You need to install the python bluetooth binding:

About the log, the CSS error occurs at startup; it is not really an error (teh traceback should be in blue, with the DEBUG type, and not in purple, with the EXCEPTION type). Can you please post the entire log (using the code /code tags)?

Ahh yeah I have been looking for if it had something to do with Bluetooth and Python.

Hi there again. I have been doing some further tests and looking into railing system.

I however went out to do a large panorama, well that was the plan, doing a sphere using a 50mm lens.

I tried 3 times and at some random internals the computer stopped communicating with Merlin.

I am using the BlueSMIRF.

I will post some part of the Log here, its most likely after I had restarted once Ubuntu so its not all there.

Just as a note now, I am not able to use the Merlin what so ever, the BlueSMIRF has the Red light and the Green Light on constantly now, its like its frozen. It is only supposed to have the Red light and then the Green one when its doing something. I am not by any way able to connect to it now. Any suggestions? Do you know how to restart the card? I really would like this to work as I was planning on some testing in the Easter H.

Mmm, it seems that you have some troubles with the Bluetooth module... You don't have a serial-TTL converter so you can test with a serial line?

Nope, I do not. I wonder if that would be better to have as well, anything you would req. for using with a Mac, As of now running Ubuntu. And I guess that should work with a Mac as well. its only the bluetooth that is not working on the Mac side right?

Any suggestions as well how I should reset the BlueSMIRF? I have left it unplugged for some time and tried again but same things, both lights are on right in the beginning.

Yeah I saw that forum post after doing some Google-ing. It sounds amazing to me that you cant reset this without mayor hassle.

Hi again, I unplugged the BlueSMIRF and left the Merlin on since last posting.

Now I tried to again to plug it in and I only get the Red light like it should be and I can see it with my computer.

I wonder if the Merlin somehow got stuck on a loop? Clogging up the card.

I will report more on how it goes tomorrow as I will try some more tests.

I now tried to connect it with Papywizard using Ubuntu, as I said before I saw the card fine on the Mac(just using the mac os bluetooth, to see if the card was there) so I thought things where fine. But.

As soon as I try to connect to the card using Papywizard it freezes again. I wonder what is going on.

Sorry if I wrote the sentence wrong, the BlueSMIRF is frozen again. Papywizard is fine it just can't connect to the card.
