Klaus,
This comment line:
<!-- First row 4-around Yaw separation 90 degrees, Pitch +90 degrees -->

Should be changed to:
<!-- First row 4-around Yaw separation 90 degrees, Pitch +80 degrees -->

Not that it affects the shoot, but...

Glad you found a set of shooting positions that works for your lens/camera.

Copying what you do with a manual pano head is the way to go when creating a Papywizard custom preset. The only 'tricky' part of the process is defining the order of the shooting positions to minimise movement of the head between shots. Making a quick sketch on paper can help to work it out.

Frederic,
I'm not sure that this should be included in a set of default presets because the +80 pitch may result in some 1.6x crop camera bodies hitting the Merlin head.

There are not a lot of default presets, so this is no problem to add it.

I understand that it is not a problem to add it as a default. But....

My thoughts are:

1. Perhaps we don't need any defaults - other than a very few 'safe' examples to demonstate the concept - at all because custom presets for sphericals are so specific to camera/lens combinations that the idea of an extensive default set of custom presets doesn't seem to make much sense? It could never provide adequate coverage of all the possibilities.

2. It is not difficult for users to create custom presets for their particular combination of camera body and lenses. Now we have the ability easily to load a custom preset on a session-by-session basis without permanently installing it - do we need a set of built-in default presets. If users are willing to share their custom presets for particular camera/lens combos then it is easy to publish and share the presets via the APP forum - well it would be better if the APP forum had a better search facility. Or they could be put on the Papywizard Wiki or soemthing?

3. Because some otherwise 'similar' (ie. in terms of sensor crop factor and image FOV) bodies are so much larger than others - for example the Nikon D300 is MUCH larger than the Nikon D40 but both are 1.5x crop bodies - then a preset that would work with one might well not work with another 'similar' spec. body because of the physical constraints of the Merlin head. I am concerned that people might end up 'carelessly' using a default preset that results in damage to their camera and/or to their Merlin head.

In any case, it is up to the user to check the compatibility with its body (I'll add a warning on the Preset notebook tab).

Hi Frédéric!

I modyfied Andrews script in a way i use my manual Manfrotto-alignment (which works perfectly). The script works very well and has good overlaps.

Ooops - i corrected it in the N800 and forgot to correct it inn the posted script . .sorry!

I´m so glad Frédéric and you gave me a "mainframe" that i can work on and learn to "understand by doing" - i´m a very un-mathematical man . .

BTW, don't you think the second template is better?

It ought to be - I wonder if it makes any real difference when stitching. I will try both and see...I'll be using my 1.5x crop D40 and 18-55mm kit zoom at 18mm (27mm 35mm equiv)

I was too 'lazy' to figure out the offsets between rows, and I thought it might also make it even harder for others to understand how to construct a custom preset if I incorporated offsets between rows.. ;)

I am surprised that it needs 12 shots in the +40/-40 rows I would have expected 10 shots to be sufficient?

I think that '20mm on 1.6x sensor' would be a better name for the preset.

Is there a way to get rid of the default presets from the drop down list because none of them are of any interset to me and they just add 'clutter' to the list?

Maybe - i used a set that´s analog to the one i use with my Manfrotto-head. And i learned that 30% overlap is the safest way to shoot.
It would ne nice to have a visualisation of the overlap for spherical shooting also - like it is with mosaic. On the other hand: if the presets handles the overlap carefully . . .
When i watch the preset´s overlaps in the APP editor usually it´s ok - but sometimes it´s a bit low i believe.

Fred: i´ll try your version.

Well, I would love to preview the pictures as they appear in APP, using an equirectangular projection, but I'm too lazy to retreive the maths under that feature ;)

Frédéric - Papywizard doesn´t accept a "°" for degree! Maybe that´s the cause for the 1.5.6.1 malfunction?
I had to delete it in the script to load it into PW.

What was the error? The default presets.xml file use this symbol, so I don't think it is the issue. More likely an encoding problem when you copy/paste the preset (the encoding must match the one defined at the top of the file, which is utf-8 by default).

after i deleted the "°" it worked all fine. I copied the set from the forum, pasted in into BBEdit, deleted "°", saved it as "presets.xml and senit it via BT from my Mac to the N800. Worked.
The same way without deleting "°" didn´t work: PW gave errormessages relating to the lined and colums whith the "°" .

Seems obvious to me that there´s an issue - at least on my N800.

Besides: the script works G-R-E-A-T!! :) RMS 2.30
No offset - NOWHERE. No editing CPs. Perfect match.

Thank you so much and: chapeau!! :)

(the room is very chaotic - we´re rearranging some things . . ;))

P.S.: here´s my "modification":P:

P.S.2:
regarding the bulky base of the Merlin i mean it could be less than -80° - but i would suggest to keep it for being symmetrical to the +80°.
What do you mean?

Good! I agree, it is better to keep -80°.

Andrew, you are right, I think I will only keep a few presets as default ones, to have something to show, and others should be put in user dir.

I will start a page on the wiki to put users presets...

Frederic,

Your modification of the preset also works very well for me with 1.5x crop D40 and 18-55mm kit zoom at 18mm.

Better than any of my variations of that preset - so offsetting the rows is an advantage I think.

Thanks for making the mods.
