More good news.

When controlled from then Merlin head and Papywizard the Gentle_JUMP IR shutter release only triggers one shot per location.

In Cruise and Shot mode using the handcontroller it would trigger 2 shots per location.

Because the Gentled_JUMP will auto repeat if contact is closed more more than a certain time I will need to check what happens with very long expsoures.
...........

The damn courier who I was told would come tomorrow to return the Merlin head just turned up - I sent him away to come back tomorrow. They didn't deliver the day they said they would either. GRRRRRRRRR! Perhaps a case of 'you pay peanuts, you get monkeys'? Do you have a similar saying in France?

About the bluetooth converter, did you try it in DTE mode? Don't think this is the problem, but...

Another possibility is the baudrate. Is it saved into the internal config? Or does it need to be set at every connection? What does the documentation say?

But to a 'normal Windows user' first serial port is COM1: so faced with a box that appears only to accept numerical entries with default of zero they might well - as I did - enter 1 for COM1:?

I will try DTE mode - I had not done.

Configuration can be programmed in and saved - I did that, and read it back to check I had 8/N/1 set.

Here's the documentation for the BTLink:

It is behaving quite differently now - it doesn't set up the BT pair. Dunno why not.

Perhaps I should go back to an earlier version of Paywizard?

Check the BT address (using the Choose dialog)... Does the Nokia correclty pair it? No need to get a previous version: this part works fine.

Yes it is pairing OK. Has light on it to confirm pairing too. But it fails with "can't connect to hardware Axis 1 can't send command".

This does not appear to be simply a case of a defective BTLink because I bought two - with intention of trying a wireless BT serial 'wireless-cable' link from PC to Merlin - and they both behave in the same way. I feel it is probably something to do with the settings in the BTLink but I don't understand enough about BT comms. to work out what.

There is an undocumented AT commnad that enables or disables power down on the RS232 interface but I tried both ways and it makes no difference.

Here's the latest debug log:

If you want me to hack Python code please list the code and mark those areas you wish me to change - I don't have an editor that will display line numbers.

The Merlin head will be going back tomorrow for replacement, because of missing battery holders, so I won't be able to do much more with this until I get a new one. Which is so frustrating now that I have it working from Windows with serial cable connection, and the Gentled_JUMP IR shutter relaase appears to work OK, I can't wait to get the BT connection from the Nokia 770 operational too.

For what's it's worth:

1. Menu/File crashes Nokia version.

2. Windows version Uninstall shows messages in French.

3. In the drop down for lens type selection in Configure, Rectilinear is not spelled correctly - the 't' is missing.

4. It seems to me that the Windows version of Papywizard is more or less useless for practical pano photography (say, running from a laptop) without ability to connect via Bluetooth.

Thanks for all your help is getting me this far - it is much appreciated.

Did you modify the serialDriver.py file as I said? I really need you to do it to see what is going on.

Did you also try to put the BT converter in DTE mode? Try to put all context informations when you send a log, so I can check all possibilities...

I've cracked it. I now have Merlin head connected successfully from Nokia 770 using the Tronisoft BTLink Bluetooth-Serial RS232 Adapter - http://www.tronisoft.com/2749.php.

There is no need for any code changes in Papywizard.

The configuration settings for the Tronisoft BTLink Bluetoooth-serial adapter that work can be seen in the screenshot below. You also need to set the switch near the 9-pn Dsub connector away from the connector in the DTE setting (not marked).

I got some useful clues from this site - http://www.wcscnet.com/Products/HdwBTRS232/HdwBTRS232Support.htm

The BTLink is very similar to the LM Technologies LM058 and one can use their Windows GUI set up software to program it - http://www.wcscnet.com/Products/HdwBTRS232/ConfigBTRS232Setup.msi

Alternatively you can program the settings using the AT command set via Hyperterminal (Windows) as documented in the User Manual you will receive with the BTLink device - http://www.tronisoft.com/ds/BTLink_Bluetooth_to_Serial_User_Manual.pdf.

I am in contact with Tronisoft and we are preparing together a module RS232 to TTL converter (modified 4201) which will be adapted well to the PAPYWIZARD project and that combined with a special " cable PAPYWIZARD " will constitute a kit "ready to use" without any soldering to be made (" plug and play " like !).
This converter " 4201 PAPY" will be available at the same price as the original and, ordered with a BT module of Tronisoft, a reduction of 1 £ will be granted by Tronisoft! The cable will have to be separately ordered, I must see who can take responsibility for distribution (KOLOR?)

As soon as the last details will be fixed with Tronisoft, I would give all references and necessary links to command!

Claude,

That's great news. We are in your debt.

Let me see if I have understood correctly:

1. Special version of Tronisoft 4201 RS232-TTL module to be offered at same price as current 4201 - to be available from Tronisoft.

2. Special cable to be made available for above module which will not require any soldering - to be available from ???

3. If special version of Tronisoft 4210 purchased from Tronisoft with a BTlink RS232-Bluetooth adapter then Tronisoft will discount the combined total price by £1.

There is no mention of a box to house the Tronisoft 4201?

The special cable will not also be available from Tronisoft?
...........

In my dreams I had imagined a 'complete kit' - for home assembly - which would include the special version of the Tronisoft 4102, the special no-soldering-required cable AND a box to house the 4201, with illustrated assembly instructions; and optional Tronisoft BTLink (or similar) - all available from the same supplier who would be willing to accept orders from, and ship to, anywhere in the world for a reasonable price. Plus, better still, a 'local' supplier in each of the major countries to minimise delivery costs

Is there any possibility that this could become a reality?

Firt serie : Claudevh
After this should be discuted with "COLOR" and/or TRONISOFT

Yes

Not yet, when I will receive the "prototype", I will take some measurements and find the right box, this will probably be a "transparent one" permiting the control of all Leds.

Probably ... Yes !

This is the ultimate objective! I hope that you will participate to the illustrated assembly instructions ...
I will ask also to Tronisoft to "preset" the BT module in advance ...
This should be "plug & [s]pray[/s] ... play" !

Claude,

That's wonderful news.

Yes, I would be happy to help with instructions if you wish. Not sure I wish to purchase another adapter 'kit' just to photograph and document it, but we'll see; I wouldn't need to buy the BTLink so perhaps it wouldn't cost that much and it would be tidier than my DIY effort.

Good luck with the transparent box - it's a nice idea to be able to see the LEDs - I wasn't able to find one in the appropriate size. I think transparent paltsic boxes may be more brittle than black ABS so perhaps harder to cut a 'hole' for access to D-sub connector?

After that all we need is an 'off-the-shelf' replacement crown with set of 'arms' for various cameras and lenses, and/or an 'off-the-shelf' kit to 'expand' the castings to increase the 'A' dimension and we're done.

That should be enough to keep us busy for 2009!

Hi all,
first post here.
Great Merlin/Orion community here !
Ordered a Merlin at http://www.teleskop-austria.at/prod.php?tid=14&lng=de#foto-mottri-nn
(Thanks Klaus for tip !)
First I have to see what I get but I am very interested in the Tronisoft Plug and Play unit(s) solution.
Never used a PDA (!) like the N770/800/810 before and as a MacUser I don't have a clue how to get all this stuff working.
But that's for later...

Hi Frank,

Welcome to the 'club'. Nice to see you have ventured here from Panoguide.com.

The 'Plug-n-Play' Tronisoft 4201 based adapter kit will be nice; but it is pretty simple to solder the cable and a couple of resistors onto the Tronisoft 4201 if you don't wish to wait for the kit. I am very clumsy with any sort of DIY but managed it without too much trouble - I just wished I had four or five hands to hold all the pieces when soldering those skinny little wires - oh, and better eyesight for close up work.

I think Nokia would be a little offended to have their Internet Tablets termed PDAs. Strangely enough they don't even come with software that a PDA would typically have. They are really battery powered PCs runing a special version of Linux called Maemo; and have a much better screen than any PDA.

You will no doubt have picked up on the fact that the first of the Nokia Internet Tablets, the 770, is now no longer sold; but it can be found on eBay at quite low prices. It was replaced by the N800 and N810, both still current models. The N810 has a slide out keyboard but that's not going to be much of an asset for use with Papywizard. The N800 and N810 have faster processors and run a later version of the Maemo OS. If you plan to use a Nokia tablet more generally, rather than just to run Papywizard, then get the N800 or N810 because for example they have more advanced support for their version of the Mozilla (essentially Firefox) browser including support for Flash 9, and they run Skype, and an awesome media player called Canola 2. All third-party software is free too.

OTOH the 770 runs Papywizard just fine and has a better industrial design for field use as a Papywizard host with its excellent slip on reversible metal cover which offers great protection to the screen, in fact to the whole device. I dropped mine on a concrete surface from waist high and it bounced a couple of times, the metal cover is a bit scratched but it's still working fine. The later N800 and 810 don't have this cover, but you can get third-party metal cases for them, just not as neat as the original on the 770.

Don't be too anxious about the Maemo OS, I was a bit too coming from Windows but my 'fears' proved to be groundless. For the most part you don't need to deal with it - any more than for the most part you don't deal with the 'guts' of OSX on a Mac - and if you follow the Papywizard install instructions you'll be fine. And if l else fails you can simply re-flash the OS and start again - a lot easier than re-installing Windows XP! There are other Merlin/Papywizard users who'll be happy to help you too - it's quite a small (but international and very friendly) club at present.

What camera body and lenses are you planning to use with Merlin/Papywizard?

Hi Andrew,
I'm not in a hurry.
First I will receive the Merlin, nice people in Austria btw

No idea how to do all the stuff with PDA remote control but I can learn.
btw it's not easy to get a used Nokia 770/800
The 810 is more availble in NL and eBay

But, even this Merlin unit, right out the box, without PDA can be a great help to do multishot/mosaic in my studio.
I am now using this: http://tinyurl.com/yr9jkn
rotating by hand:
Mostly with a 70-200mm or 300mm (5DCanon)

http://tinyurl.com/6o7wr3 are 12 shots about 100 Mb final. Made with the Manfrotto Hook.
If I like the Merlin..... a standard Merlin will stay in my studio and a second (OMG) will be modded for real pano's.
159,- euro's is a bargain for such a device.

grtz

Frank,

I understand Dutch but this not my mother language who is French !
I prefer that we don't introduce a new language in the forum, because this is more complicated when you are obliged to post the same message in different language.

"ESPERANTO" will be fine.

Hi friends;

I've been reading your very interesting information about Merlin, Nokia + Papywizard, etc.
Congratulations and thanks to all.

I'm working with a NN3 with Canon 5d & 20d + Tokina 10-17mm, Olympus 21 & 28, Canon 50 & 85 for panos.
Now, I'm waiting for Merlin and Nokia n800.

I'm interested in the news about the crown replacement and the new Tronisoft "plug & play" solution.

Will be compatible the new Tronisoft with Nokia n800 and BT latops ??

Sorry, by my poor english.

Thanks,

joni.

Thanks,

Yes, the special variant of the Tronisoft TTL-RS232 module is functionally identical, to the version we have been using before; the difference is that yiu will not have to do any soldering to assemble it with the cable.

You need to add to that a RS232-Bluetooth adapter - the BTLink adapter from Tronisoft is the least expensive and works very well:
http://www.tronisoft.com/2749.php

Together with a special cable (which will need no soldering), the new variant of the Tronisoft TTL-RS232 module and the BTLink RS232-Bluetooth adapter make up the interface that is attached to the Merlin head in place of the standard hand controller.

Papywizard will run on Nokia 770,N800 ands N800 Internet Tablets, on PCs running Windows 2000, XP and Vista, and Linux. All versions support a Bluetooth connection.

Does this answer your question?

Wat you can do without material is:
- to try Papywizard on your desktop, this wil be very usefull for learning the possibilies in simulation mode.

- read some items about the choice of Merlin modification or not, crown modification or not.

Hi again;

Claude and Andrew, thanks for your answers…

Now I have a PowerBook with Wifi and BT but nothing about Payton..., and this Thursday I'll receive a Nokia n800, but I don't have any experience with linux or other tablets too, but I hope to learn with some of your help… Thanks.

Claude, if it's possible, I'm interested in a Tronisoft pack. Thanks.

All the best,

Joni,

Here is the installation guide for installing the software on your N800 (when you get it):

It is quite easy - you don't need to know anything about Linux.

Hi Joni,

For the installation, you can also have a look to :

http://www.autopano.net/wiki/action/view/Install_Papywizard_on_Nokia_770_N800_N810

You are on my list for the new module, but you have to order yourselve ! I am not reseller .... ;)
When I get the URL's from Tronisoft, I will post it.

As I know actually, only 5 modules are ready ... This is too short !
On top of that, it seams that no one of the other Tronisoft modules serie "42XX" are availlable and this from one day to the other ...
I suspect that they have "canibalised" all the stock for adapting to the Papy model !

I will stress them to produce more and rapidelly !
