Portable version of AutoPano possible?

by Pipetman » Tue Jun 19, 2007 3:33 pm

I'm switching computers fairly often or re-install my OSes on a regular basis. Thus, I really like programs, that don't require an installer and give you the option to write settings into an ini file instead of the registry. That also makes it possible to run these programs e.g. from a USB stick or an external hard drive.

I was just wondering, if it would be possible to make Autopano portable? It won't make or brake my decision to buy AP1.4 (once it's out), but it would be a nice thing to have. Thx.

There are standard ways to transform a software into a portable version. This can be done easily : thinstall is a tool to do it.

Hm, a Thinstall license is $5000 and they seem to target the corporate market. Other ways of making applications portable are not exactly trivial and involve things like AutoIT scripting etc...

The other option is to have a switch for launching autopano via command line that says to use .ini files instead of registry. It's enough to get a portable version. Oh no, except one part : microsoft crt libs 8.0 ... they need to be installed in the system.

How to do this? Is it actually possible? I'd like to "autopano" on all the computer i could use, and my USB key go everywhere with me.

I will add that to the todo list. A switch in command line to use an .ini file on windows to store settings instead of the registry.

I just upgraded to the new AP 2.0.1 (quite an exercise, as I was confronted solely with websites in French to buy the new license) and - as far as I can tell - it seems like the portable feature didn't make it into the new version.

A bit disappointing, as this was one of the major reasons for me to upgrade. Anyone have an update, if we can expect this anytime soon?

Thx

'portable feature' is maybe not the best way to put it, but as mentioned further up, it's simply the possibility to run APP in a portable mode (e.g. from a USB stick, having all settings in an ini or xml file (instead of the registry) and allowing for relative paths definitions etc.)

Hmm, I always just drag & dropped the app and ran it from pretty much any location I could think of...

Hmm, that might work on a Mac (?), but certainly not on a Windows machine.

Settings and reg info will be lost thats why they want a portable version that doesn't use the registry.
