Water problems, as always

by leifs » Mon Jun 06, 2011 7:24 pm

Usually it is possible to use a workaround to fix waterproblems: move the pictures manually to the right position. This time APG has made it very difficult for a reason I don't understand.

The project:
Setiz VR Drive, PEN-EP2 with 140mm eq vertical, 60 pictures in one row to cover 360.

The problem:
I cannot get APG to find links in picture 39
When i want to place it manually I discover that it is scaled down !! and much lower than the naboring pictures at left.
(all pictures are shot at 140mm eq as shown)
Looking closer: all pictures have a calculated focal of 130-165mm and they are scaled up and down accordingly.

My workaround, putting 39 in the right place, isn't enough. I have to scale the naboring pictures manually.
Or is there something I have missed ?

Leif

Water is the content that we have really issue to detect. It's in fact a self deforming object, it has no real shape and that's why autopano can hardly find cp in there. My personnal experience with that is if any water picture is more than 5 seconds more distanced from another one, you cannot get any cps because of the shape change.

2 solutions :
- works as you did with visual adjustment. It's often the quickest solution and easy to understand.
- use manual control point adding one by one. Use the horizon to put some on this part. Long but can be more accurate.

Why does APG scale the pictures ? They are shot at 140.0mm with motor. No need for scaling.
Is it possible to turn off scaling ?

Yes, but only when the Lens distortion correction option is deselected before detection (before the first optimization, that is.) As a result you must not use the current project but start a new project.

Scaling is mandatory for 360 deg panos, useful for wide-angle lens panos and (I guess) useless or harmful for long-lens panos...

Note: this option is automatically deselected for Gigapixel an for Quick optimization settings.

A workaround could be a pattern you generate before shooting. But that needs very high accuracy of the setup. I didn´t do it myself - because my head-controller writes positioning files - but i know it works. Guess there´s somebody here who has experiences doing it.

I used the tip from GURL and it worked (although APG still did some scaling: 135-145mm). thanx.
the result is now at http://www.rundskuer.no/krpano/nystoylhornet_horisonten.html

Placing of featureless images is not easy, I know. By now I have to do some manual work to get it right.
But sometimes I feel like fighting APG !

This case:
I have turned off "lens distortion correction" so APG don't scale the images.
But why the #...!! distort the prictures as shown below ??
All the pictures are shot at manual settings with my Seitz VR drive at 140mm eq. No need for transformations.
