FYI: 2.0.6 crashes much more often than 2.0.4

by MJSfoto1956 » Tue Dec 22, 2009 8:57 pm

Just an (anectdotal) data point:

My Dell laptop crashes far more often with 2.0.6 than the same laptop did with 2.0.4

Specs:

2Gb, 2 core, Dell D630 (sorry, I'm pretty poor these days)
Typical # of images stitched: 2-30 (max)
Windows XP SP3
Plenty of hard disk space (several hundred gigabytes free)

Observed Behavior: if the size of the individual images is small (e.g. 2800x4000 pixels), and the number of stitched images is also small (e.g. 4-6) then it pretty much works 100% of the time

However, if I have much larger scans (e.g. 4000x6000 pixels) then it almost always dies if I try to do anything -- for example, edit the control points. Note that this behavior will happen with as few as TWO (large) IMAGES!!! Note that this is with only APP running and no other applications.

Other observations: reboot of my laptop sometimes helps, sometimes does not. Resizing the output to be smaller than 9000 pixels sometimes helps, sometimes not. However, in general if the stitched output is greater than 9000 pixels then the occurrence of crashes rises exponentially.

NOTE: I had similar (occasional) problems with 2.0.4 but the frequency of crashes with 2.0.4 is a fraction of what I am currently experiencing with 2.0.6

YMMV

Thanx for listening! (et Joyeux Noel!)

Michael

Heh, I suppose it's the Smartblend problem again. What blender have you selected in the render settings?

the problem happens BEFORE any output. For example, when I go to delete control points.

I also have the feeling that 2.06 is a bit less stable. My copy crashes at different stages, like when removing an image from a layer, or when cropping a large image and sending it to batch stitcher.

Agreed, same here. Reverted back to 2.0.3 and life is much better.

How can I get a hold of 2.0.3? I saw the link to download older versions but it's right back to 1.4

I do agree APP 2.0.4 is more stable than APP 2.0.6.
I installed APP 2.0.4 instead of APP 2.0.6.

Use an external drive of 250GB min. for swapping!
Using the internal drive maybe the problem with larger stitches.
The OS might use the drive at the same time as APP - that slows
down the process at least or crashes it in the worst case.

(i don´t have any experiences with APP 2 but with APG - and here an external resp. extra internal drive reserved for APG is essential in terms of speed and stability)

Actually, I'm using eSATA drives as my work/swap area. Ironically, things work less "buggy" (but noticeably slower) with the local drive!! Go figure! (I wonder if this is a Windows USB/eSATA driver issue?)
