Phantom 2 Quad Copter

In the panorama field, hardware is also part of the success. You can discuss here about it: camera, computer, pano head, anything

Phantom 2 Quad Copter

by Destiny » Wed Apr 09, 2014 7:51 am

This is a very exciting piece of hardware... I have checked them out before but I did not like many of the features. But, it seems my thought have been realised in this new version just announced.. Firstly I did not like the battery pack.. It seemed to be very amerterish and poorly designed.. But now its a nice pack easily replaced. Also, the return to home base was something I was thinking would make sense and to my amazement its been done..

I feel the GoPro is a good camera but the one fixed to this Phantom seems to be outstanding..

A question I have, how is a pano like this captured.??. Is it a matter of guessing it all or is there more too it.. There is an app which is now available for Android. So it what the camera sees should show on my Samsung.

and this.. sooooo cool.. Makes my heart rase.. Perhaps it the music..

I read something else too.. Perhaps I misunderstood it.. Is it possible to use virtual googles with the Phantom.??..

"Outstanding"? No. Not at all. Did you have a closer look on the beach-pano . . . . ??
The trick is the 3-axis gimbal. A good camera instead of this cheapo would suit
the copter better.
But most likely it will not be interchangable because of the gimbal.

Klaus

PS to be precise: it´s ok for movie, but would be a bad choice for interactive and zoomable panos.

I was more referring to the many reviews which seem to put the new camera way ahead of the GoPro...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GWFfBEbkZg#t=89
The camera can also shoot RAW which would be great for creating edited EVs for bracketed shots....

Also, I would not be too interested in a highly zoomable aerial pano but rather to use this medium as an intro pano to a high quality VR Tour.. There is a forum member who has a lot of work in Malaysia shooting an intro pano using one of these Phantom Quad Copters...

I wonder what brand this camera inbuilt camera is...

soon there will be a "Phantom 2 Vision+" with a better (?) camera in a gimbal.
don't know what brand the camera is, but there will be a "ADOBE LENS PROFILE SUPPORT"
http://www.dji.com/product/phantom-2-vision-plus

starting to get interesting :-)

whatever Phantom tries to catch up... others were faster and did it better =D
have a look at this Phantom mod made by dslrPros (also Videos on bottom):
http://www.dslrpros.com/Products/tabid/ ... fault.aspx

have a look at the xAircraft Stella gimbal. the world lightest brushless gimbal (for gopros).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ktW-NjutFk
fpvguy has also some nice flying Videos on his blog http://www.fpvguy.com

if you wanna have anamorphic "cineascope" feeling without cutting/crippling the gopro Resolution and without the gopro typical heavy distortions on the edges, than have a look here:
http://www.fpvguy.com/2014/01/anamorphx.html
https://www.youtube.com/watch?annotatio ... 6AR2TeIcck

sidenote - nothing to do with panos. but if you're interested in drones and Video than you must like following too: =D =D
first persion view - in short fpv combined with Delta wing airplanes far more than 100miles per hour fast.
pilot on ground via Antenna Tracker (>10km range !!!) connected via Googles to the Video cam of the plane flying the plane with first Person view...
... from top of the mountains >3000m and 10m above the mountain ridges downhill....
http://vimeo.com/82135634
be patient until Minute 1.55... just stunning....
(found here: http://vimeo.com/channels/firstpersonview )

I love the wide angle lens option but I would question the sill image quality... The new Phantom 2+ Version has an all new camera which seems to be very good and it can shoot RAW which I really like...

Just 1 hour 20 mins from us are the Glass House Mountains...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Glass ... ntains.jpg

We went there last year but I really needed a zoom lens.. This was when we decided to buy the Sigma 50-500mm.. I can zoom in quite well and its nice and clear, even hand held.. We hope to get out to the Glass House Mountains next week since I am on Term break.. =D It was when we were there last year we saw a guy with a mini copter of kinds.. It was not the Phantom but it had a Go Pro attached. We checked out the video he captured but thought it bounced so much it was quite horrible. But the Phantom has rubber buffers so it would do a much better job.. Some parts of the Glass House Mountains are so inaccessible it would be impossible to get close enough to capture a photo even with a zoom lens, but the Phantom would be ideal.. The battery life is still quite short so a second pack would be a good idea.. If you buy it at the same time, its about half the price so worth buying with the Phantom purchase. They also recommend buying replacement propellers. They are not expensive.. So even with a nice zoom lens like the 50-500mm, a Phantom would be able to get up close and capture video where a zoom lens could not..

These days there seems to be so many exciting ways to capture great photography in places once considered impossible.... In another thread I posted a mini underwater camera which like the Phantom is just amazing.. I love the direction all this technology is heading..

With all three methods of capturing photography, a small professional documentary could be captured. A fly round video using the Phantom, zoomed high resolution pano images using the Sigma 50-500mm and with the many clear water lakes around the mountains, and underwater camera... =D

The Australian police have seen the value in the Phantom since they are beginning to use them for search and rescue.. During our bush fires there was some awesome video captured..

Yep - great idea using a rotating mirrorless! If you manage to have the copter standing still for the moment of shooting it will be great i guess.

best, Klaus

no Need for that. not at all. thats the fantastic. also my mentioned brushless gimbal for the Phantom can do the same trick.
the copter is rotating x/y/z axis and the gimbal is automatically erasing These movements by do countermoves of the comera
and gps modul is keeping the drone at the same Point "Holding the nodal"
see my links in prev. posting for the gimbal, one Video explainin how it works and second one with Little demo Video...
in andrews link you can see in first Image of the Video the brushless gimbal doing the same: (see screenshot)

such gimbals in Action:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMkPZBbqjAA
xaircraft gimbal promo Videos:
http://www.xaircraft.com/x-gallery/

in Facts theres open source android Software available like droidplanner, steadiplanner, droidplane, mavlinkHub and others you can sue to plan your flight by using Google maps to set markers (incl. altitude above ground - info not coming from googlemaps but from drones gps modul). you can define how drone is flying to that Point, how Long it shoudl stay before flying to next Point. you can use coming home function, even followme can be achieved easily. the gimgal is independant acting using gps data and gyro sensors to stabilize the cam)

I guess quality comes at a price.. Where does it end.. We do not have a landing pad outside our home for a big helicopter with my D800 mounted on the front, but the boot of my car is just perfect for a Phantom which would fit very nicely... =D

Just this week a little 3 year old girl went missing in Childers a small town in Queensland, we used to live near there.. Lots of cane fields to get lost in.. Bundaberg is the next big town, where they make the famous Rum.. We thought a Phantom would be excellent at searching the many cane fields.. That event turned out to be a good new ending. The little thing was found wondering at the other side of the road to her home.. :)
