3D 360 Video comes at a very high price

In the panorama field, hardware is also part of the success. You can discuss here about it: camera, computer, pano head, anything

3D 360 Video comes at a very high price

by Destiny » Sun Jan 05, 2014 10:19 pm

Hey, something new.... 3D 360 Video.. but.. $$$$

GoPro 3+ @ $500 X 12 = about $6,000 + $750 for the rubber/plastic Rig to hold them all. eeeeks .. Serious stuff.., but only those with the 3D glasses can view them..

I think the GoPro is a nice little camera, super sharp, but I would need some serious work to warrant buying all this gear for a limited use.. As for the Rig to holds all those cameras, I would suggest in the Australian summer they would be no good at all.. This week, its been 45c and in some places 50c.. I guess for indoors with air con only... But if outdoors the entire Rig would giggle around like birthday jelly..

Perhaps GoPro will make a one camera unit stripping all of the cases away and just leaving the inner workings so the entire thing was always very stable and call it the GoPro CamBall.. But I guess if one system failed, that would be that. Being all separate, you could use one of the spares you carry with the other 12 GoPro cameras..

And the worst thing is, it is gonna be a total failure. Users don't want to look around like crazy what is happening at places they are not looking. Always too late, always paranoid you missed something.

My advice, don't bother, make 360 panoramas a succes.

I totally disagree.. I think all this New Media has great value and I love the innovation. I just don't like the high price of some of this New Media, since I am certain that its the amateur market that drives most of the 360 media, whether it be 360 Video or 360 Still Images. For any New Media its going to start of expensive but in time it will become more affordable.. Also, internet speed technology will greatly improve over the coming years.. Well. I can only hope it does since much of this New Media has issues with my internet speed.. I personally feel innovators like Michael Kintner Founder of 360Heros lead us into a new and exciting directions... as long as you are rich..  I have seen some really great 360 Video and feel it has a very unique use in Education, Research, Police, Military and more.. It just comes down to apprising those that might become stake holders in helping to drive this New Media.. Then perhaps it will being to be more accepted.. I also feel that companies like GoPro need to take a more active role in promoting New Media technologies rather than aiming their advertising at the person buying their gear, when they should be more focused on the end user, the person buying the finished media, but this is not happening.. It's all left in the hands of the few professionals and many ammeters that buy the hardware and software to promote the media, who often do not have skills in this area to advertise or promote it..

I saw some demonstrations of 360° in stereo at the last Photokina - shown in the backrooms of a major-player . . . it was somewaht irritating: they didn´t have a common NPP - and that made it something funny looking around.

Stereo in 360° sure would be nice to have . . but actually stereo isn´t at it´s point even with "flat" displays in a satisfying stage. Guess we need completely different display-technology like holograms or something like that.

Let's go one step back. instead of 360 degrees we go to 90 degrees viewing angle, 3d TV. Is that a success? People are buying the TV's yes, but are they using it?
Why would something that is no succes become a succes because you need to/can move left and right and up and down to see interesting things?

From what I have read and seen, 3D TV was dud... Anyone with one wished they didn't... Cannot even view some simple programs like the News without searching for the glasses.. At one time they had a medical alert, it appears after viewing a movie it was not advisable to drive a car.. Apparently visual distortion was the cause of some car accidents.. 3D TV will only take off when there is no need to wear goggles or glasses.

I love the 3D 360 innovation of this Rig but I have always felt that the standard 6 GoPro Rig was far too expensive for most.. As for 12 GoPro Cameras plus spares.. The market to sell the hardware to would be very limited but the market to view the 3D media would be even more limited... I would suggest it would be a specialised market. Perhaps police, military or scientific... They would then be the only ones viewing their own media, and the few that would be able to afford such technology.. To have 12 cameras all setup like that.. Its obvious that issues may arise... But innovations like this are good for everyone.. They get us thinking as well as giving others ideas.. At the moment, just one GoPro is too expensive for me... For the cost of this Rig, I would rather buy a high-end Mac Pro + Monitor and still have change to buy some shoes.. :)))).....

It would be nice if someone decide to create a 360° immersive stereoscopic movie to watch it with Oculus Rift.

I think that one day we will see it

Probably GoPro should develop a dual lenses camera because a 12 camera rig is not stable. Or PTGrey could build a professional stereoscopic camera.
