Omni suitable for still 360° images?

by Peter987 » Mon Aug 22, 2016 8:20 pm

The Omni is being mainly targeted to the VR video market, but what are the capabilities for
360x180 equirectangular still images?

What max still image equirectangular output resolution is possible with it (I'm not talking about video)?
Does the software stitch the images, or is it a manual process?
Can I shoot synchronised HDR / bracketing images?
What about synchronised interval shooting?

Lot's of questions.... in a nutshell: I'm wondering if this rig could be a nice setup for 360° photos as well.

just got mine and in the process of getting set up, good question.

Maybe shoot in time lapse mode then just stitch any set of 6 images?

Have fun with your Omni, macalenny.

What I'm basically wondering about is if the Omni rig can only handle/trigger video, or if it is also capable of starting simultaneous interval shooting of still images.

Would love to see some low light equirectangular images shot with Omni.

Hi Jane, Peter,

Thanks for your interest in Kolor and the Omni.

The max resolution for still images with Omni is around 12K. The Omni importer stitches the images almost automatically and you can render directly with this software - you do not need to open Autopano Giga.

There's no HDR feature whatsoever. You would need to change the EV settings manually between each shot and then use Autopano Giga to merge and stitch the images together.

There is a time lapse feature if it is what you mean by "synchronised interval shooting"

The Omni is a convenient tool to shoot both 360 video and still images. BUT the amount of parallax makes it almost impossible to get a perfect stitching with close objects for still images - we have a parallax compensation feature for videos.

I hope that helps.

Best,

Clément

Hi Clément,

I hope you realise that you answered my original question exactly 1 year later :)
Anyway, thanks for the extra information, although I figured out most of it already with our Omni.

Too bad that there is still no HDR or even bracketing photo shoot mode available. Yes DSLR setups are better for still 360˚ photos, and the main focus of the Omni is video. But we place our Omni at locations impossible to handle with DSLRs, and it always feel like a missed opportunity since we cannot get the best photo quality out of the Omni due to the manual process of changing EV settings (which is way to time consuming). I hope there will be some love for more advanced photo shoot modes in the near future.

Kind regards,

Peter

Actually I didn't realize that, my bad. As the expression goes, better late than never.
Keep an eye on the GoPro Fusion, it is a very compact 360 camera and it is very powerful: https://gopro.com/fusion

I'm keeping an eye out for the GoPro Fusion, and applied for the pilot program, but never got any further information. Again we have to find out about specifics on other websites.

It will not be my solution to 12K HDR/bracketing shots.
