I have an old Celestron NexStar GT80 sitting in my closet and was wondering if anyone has info on using this for pano or motion timelapes with the Papywizard software. I actually set it up with a factory serial cable to a USB to serial converter on my PC running Papywizard 2.120 but could not get the software to connect. I searched the forum for anything on this device and came up empty. Hate to spend $175 for the Sky-Watcher Multifunction Mount if the Nextar GT80 will work the same.

Hi Mike,
I am working on a Papywizard plugin for the Celestron CPC 1100. I believe that it has the same communication protocol as the NexStar GT 80. Here is a thread about my driver

Your NextStar 80GT mount is not really suited to use as a pano head because, unlike the Merlin, the vertical arm is canted backwards relative to the axis of horizontal rotation.

Hello Mike,
Except what Andrew say (Axis not aligned)
This mount can be used for Giga's where the alignment isn't mandatory ...
Your question:
- This mount NextStar 80GT has "exactly" the same protocol then the Merlin !
- This protocol isn't the same as the CPC mount ..!
The wiring of the Nexstar 80GT is the same as the Merlin ...
Conclusions:
You can use the same connection material (BT and Wired) and Papywizard with the Merlin "plug-in" for both 2 mounts ... ![]()

I bought the skywatcher a few weeks after getting no reply and was too busy to even try the BT module and the Papywiard with the Celestron.... now I will give it try, this could be interesting!
The axis offset isn't as important to me... I have and am using a Skywatcher now but Time Lapse is of big importance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kx10WwLhjXg) and the Celestron GT80 would work well with that.
Will have to disassemble the Skywatcher as I built the BT Module into it and will post the results here when done.

Hello Mike,
I am "in admiration" in front of your timelapse production ... ![]()
I hope that you will get the Celestron working !
Do-you know the MX2 controler from Dynamic perception ?
http://dynamicperception.com/index.php? … ;cPath=1_5
This controler is able to control the Merlin (and probably the Celestron) in Timelapse/Dolly feature.
I just finish to build one from the kit and I will test it in a near future ...
This controler is "probably" the most adapted hardware for this type of application !
Chris & Jay (OpenMoco) have made an excellent job in conception of this controler ...
On top of that they have integrated timelapse control of the camera, the Merlin control and the Dolly control ... the ideal combination and this is place for additional other controls !

Claude,
Yes, I've been tracking the Dynamic Perception for some months now and very much want to purchase one but am still saving money..... I really am excited to see the intergration of the pano head on the Dolly for true 3 axis time lapse as this is what I am most passionate about. The folks over at Dynamic Perception are on the right track and I hope to be able to afford their product soon!
I would be very interested to see what you achieve with their creation!
