I have purchased a Merlin head which i have modded to take my Canon 5d Mk2 using a Manfrotto slide mount and i have a 15m Clark Mast on order for fixing to my vehicle for high level photography.
I need to find a way to keep the panohead level when it is at the top of the post and i have seen some manual leveling heads for tripods and I wondered if anyone has used these or made motorised ones which can keep the head level when the post is extended?

Welcome to the forum...
Perhaps I am gravely mistaken but I would imagine that the Merlin+camera is going to move around quite a bit in the wind at the top of a mast so any idea of precise levelling is a nonsense?
But that doesn't matter - the moving around - because you'll have nothing very close to the camera so parallax is unlikely to be an issue and you can level the stitched pano very easily in Autopano Pro/Giga.

Hello Bri999,
Welcome to the forum !
I fully agree with Andrew (mediavets) !
This is not so important and you will be "surprised" that when you will encounter "strong windy" conditions, you will not get real problems ... the key factor is to have sufficient pictures "overlap" 30 to 40 % and to use the capabilty of Autopano to correct the "horizon line" ...
Have a look on the next links with "pôle pano's" taken in those conditions !
The pictures are taken by Autopano/Papywizard community members !

If you need realy a control, you can use the
"Seculine Action Level Cross Digital Spirit Level" with the "Remote Slave Display"

Thank you for all the info and links. All my current panos have been done at ground level on a custom built head (on my brothers blog http://www.andrewdorey.co.uk/blogdetail … =3&c=1 ) and the results on http://www.virtual-swanage.co.uk/galler … fault.aspx so it will be interesting to see how they look when 50 ft up ![]()

A very nice DIY job.
Are you planning to make a custom 'crown'/clamp for the Merlin head?
For reasons mentioned in my previous post I read that it's not that vital to position your camera/lens at the No Parallax Point when shooting from a 50 foot pole, and certainly not with longer focal length lenses. OTOH (I read that) it is desirable to position the camera+ lens close to the centre of mass to reduce the tendency for the top of the pole to sway around.
I know you'll be using a more robust mast than this but you may find something of interest here:

Are you planning to control the Merlin with papywizard? If so, what platform will you use to run Papywizard - a Nokia Internet Tablet or a netbook or a laptop? Do you plan to use a wireless Bluetooth connection or a wired serial connection? Will you have the Merlin trigger the shutter via Papywizard or do you plan to use a tethered shooting method?

I will make a custom clamp for the merlin head to fit onto the clark mast. I am planning to make a "quick release" system so its easy to remove when not in use.

I have tried papywizard on my tablet pc and i will be using a wired serial connection and a usb lead for remote camera control of my Canon 5D mk2. I will have the shutter connected to the merlin so i can run pre-programed panoramics and i can also trigger it via the canon eos utility software.
I am also working on a simple .net windows app to contol the merlin head which i am planning to port to the new windows mobile 7 phones when they are released later this year.
I may try to make one for my android phone as well but i need to get the bluetooth wireless box first before i can try that.
Its a shame that the Apple iPad dosnt support bluetooth serial as that would be an ideal tablet format machine to control the head outdoors.
