Sorry just reading through that web page again....it only takes a fisheye lens!!!!! and only the 5D MkII camera. ![]()

PS: what can this one do, that the Merlin, Gigapan or even DrClauss can't do? from what I can read, there is a lot it can't do that they can do!

Didn't notice it was a fisheye lens, in that case it looks useless for me to use such expensive head for just a fisheye lens ! Is it just me to think it's completely insane ?

The mechanic looks very strong, but as it is only used for full-spherical panos with a fisheye, it is a waste of accuracy! Such head could/should be used for giga-panos...
BTW, the tilt sensor used to apply an automatic correction on yaw/pitch is a very good idea.

It should be compared with a alternative robotic head plus APG because it is a complete system.
What can it do that seems rather special (to me):
1. Fully automatic HDR shooting controlling the camera via USB from pano head resident software.
2. Automatic geo-tagging via built-in GPS.
3. Some means of automatically 'tagging' which images belong to which pano, later exploited by fully automated batch stitching and rendering software.
4. Tilt sensor with subsequent compensation when stitching and rendering.
5. Apparently very fast stitching and rendering even on relatively 'modest' hardware, for exampke a laptop system, so whole system can be fully portable.
6. Browser-based pano head control over Wifi ethernet connection, runs on iPod Touch or other Wifi enabled Internet device (I guess it would run on Nokia Internet tablets, perhaps Android phones?). This is of course quite different from Merlin/Papywizard where the bulk of the 'smarts' is in the Papywizard software and not resident in the head.
7. Relatively powerful Intel Atom CPU and standard Linux OS used in two-axis head, the 'smarts' of the system reside in the head rather than in a remote controller; unlike Merlin/Papywizard where the Merlin head is relatively 'dumb'.
8. Camera system attached to head via the lens rather than the camera body. Allows lens position to be calibrated (and thereafter remain fixed) by manufacturer. The lens is always supplied with, and remains 'permanently' mounted, on head.
9. Standardisation of lens and camera body permits high degree of automation and delivers a system that appears to require minimal special skills on behalf of the operator.
I have the impression that this is a well thought out system that incorporates some novel ideas and which is rather more than the sum of its parts.
Yes, it's expensive but probably not too expensive for its target markets - one of which appears to be scene of crime documentation.

the managing director Steuerwald is one of the founders of Spheron
the target market is crime scene investigation and facility documentation
now we have three german companies adressing this:
Spheron, Weiss, Lizardq

Ok, its very suited for its target market, but I doubt many of us here fits within this category.
Its a nice looking unit, it would be great if it would be made with other lens, choices, I know very well how that 15mm FE lens performs on full frame camera. The price tag is a little on the high side, but that is probably because its not high enough on my priority list :-)
