does someone know this animal?

absolutle non panorama topic...
... but now I've a reason during my pano shootings not to put all equipment directly on ground... ;-)

well today on a terrace around 8:30pm I saw following animal coming along...
I never saw this before. Does someone know the name of this animal?
its about 8cm long, hairy and on stony ground it look awkward crawling
but after reaching the soil (top left corner of picture after 1 second it was digging into the soil and it was gone.

Liebe Gruesse,
Georg

Re: does someone know this animal?

That one does great damage to our potato plants... It's very common in our part of the world and it's name is something like "pig-of-a-priest". Weird, I know! smile

Some of my panoramas, posted in the Autopano Pro flickr group.

Re: does someone know this animal?

Are these only in Bulgaria?  If they destroy potatoes, how can a farmer protect his crop since potatoes are underground and based on it's name, it also must be underground.  That would be quire devastating to both our food industry and the farmer if they also multiplied like flies and destroyed the whole crop.  A farmer would have to have enough business funding to carry himself over until he could figure out how to fix the problem.   If they go underground then, do they seem to keep a hole open for air as they don't appear to be able to burrow like worms.  And do you know if these have been around a long time or are they a mutated species from other types of species?  Thank you for any help you can give me.

Hi, gkaefer.

The insects is called as "OKERA" in Japanese.
Perhaps called "Mole cricket" in English.
Please see this pages.

Best regards.
