What new laptop

I am writing this on an Acer Aspire 5920 which has done sterling service but the screen is beginning to blank, as far as I can tell with heavier graphics loading/the gain turned up.

The other fact of the matter is that this machine does not support GPU processing in APG but APG does show it as 2-core. It has 2GB RAM.

I seek recommendations for a replacement laptop which I can take with me on my travels and does support GPU.

Also, not least with the possible greater demands of 2.5 new rendering engine, is 2GB RAM enough? Probably not, certainly when 'ghost removal' is set.

Weight is not an issue. This weighs around 3 kilos...

Thanks

David Andrew

Re: What new laptop

Been looking at laptops.  I happen to like Dell because they are generally easy to upgrade.

I'm torn between a studio 14" and studio 17".  The 14 is a bit more portable, but it will go into my carry-on anyway.  Weight is not an issue, its only a couple of pounds more (and I'm a big guy).

The 17" gives a better resolution (up to 1080p) and can have two hard drives internally.  I'm really leaning towards that one.  Pricewise, when you get into i7 territory, they are within $50 of each other.  And if you look in the right place, you can get an i7-740 in the 17" model.

Here's the numbers if anyone is interested:

Thanks [bo] and hankkarl; and further contributions welcome

How do we know a machine supports GPU processing in APG?

Re: What new laptop

Just to add that a modern laptop should have at least 3GB RAM, preferably 4 or more. If you have the money - SSD is a must, either as a factory or post-purchase upgrade. As for the GPU - modern discrete graphic cards should work just fine with APP and, as always, the "bigger" the better smile

Personally, I'm aiming for something small, light and with enough processing power to do simple stitches. I never really liked the "mobile workstation" laptop class, as well as the huge 15+ inches machines, but to each his own.

Re: What new laptop

Budget? Translating GBP to Euros, up to €400-450.

Re: What new laptop

A brand new laptop for 400 Euros is going to be hard to find. Especially the productive kind...

Re: What new laptop

Ouch, leedsjoe, you are not making it easy for yourself.
what have you come up with? I would be interested to hear.
I myself would probably go for the HP Envy with SSD 15" or smaller, but that is still miles out of your budget

Henrik

PS: Currently use a HP - draggable-desktop-replacement DV-99xx - with dual HDD, but only 4GB of ram, 17" and its just too big and besides it dies when I do a lot of processing. Last year we went to Arnhem Land, NT, Australia, photographing, and trying to process 10-15Gb each day, was just a nightmare. The machine would often just shut down, I had to have a desk cooling fan blowing at it constantly, and this was in an air-conditioned house.
