To remove original crown, I presume I will need to remove the outer casing.
I removed the two screws just below the crown, the four screws around the HC and Aux plugs,
plus the round lock nut on the Snap plug in.
The top separates, but the bottom is being held back and won't come off.
Do I force it open (I don't want to break anything). Or am I missing something?
Many thanks.

You didn't need to remove the 4 screws arround the HC; they maintain the connectors on the casing...
There are 2 more screws at the bottom: you first need to remove the 4 screws under the head, remove that casing, then you will see the 2 remaining screws.

oops, I edit this posting because of Freds remark to make the situation a bit clearer
(the pic was taken and marked with circles to show the place of the screws for separating the two black metal parts of the Merlin to get more horizontal clearing)
look at the two holes in the outer bottom corners (a bit below the red circles):
there are the two more screws you need to remove to take the housing apart
accessible only if you unscrew first the bottom plastic part around the tripod mounting thread

I think you put the circles on the wrong place; the holes are at the bottom...
