Repeatable BugSplat with 15 bracketed images

APP 2.0.6 trial. Win7-Pro-64

APP repeatably crashes with BugSplat when rendering a bracketed exposure of 15 images (5 separate images shot at bracketed 0.3, -1.0, and -2.3). The BugSplat takes place during Smartblend of the 2nd bracket. This has occurred four times (I've uploaded several of the BugSplat dumps when they occurred).

Here is a link to a zip file with the 15 images, if that helps.

Here is a link to another .zip file of a different set of 15 bracketed images that has repeatable BugSplat'ed several times. Again, it was during Smartblend rendering of the 2nd bracket in the set:

Am I doing something wrong?

I had no problems rendering to JPEG. APG 2.06 on Windows XP 32-bit. Quad core CPU and 4GB RAM. And several other programs running at the same time.

What render settings are you using?

The o/s is Win-7-Pro-64, and I'm using APP-64bit. e8400 (core-2-dual) with 8gb dram.

There are a large number of render settings. I think the deviations from defaults might be:
* larger cache size
* different naming convention
* Jpeg medium compression level-5
* DPI 240 instead of 72
* Render done sound off

Attached are screen shots of the various setting pages.

I'll see what happens on another computer on the home network with Q6600 (quad), W7-64-HomePremium, and 2gb of dram. I think the settings are just about the same. I could try putting all settings back to default and see what happens.

Re: Repeatable BugSplat with 15 bracketed images

Put the cache size to minimum.

I get crashes using PSD/spline64/smartblend, JPG/spline64/smartblend, and PSD/bicubic/smartblend but not JPG/bicubic/smartblend.

Changed cache from 512 to 10, and jpg/spline64/smartblend.

Try changing your cache size.

This seems like a successful work-around. I reduced from 2000MB to 256MB and was able to get the bracketed panos rendered. THANKS!

Odd, but it seems to make a difference to be doing a bracketed exposure. When I render
1,4,7,10,13
and then
2.5.8,11,14
and then
3,6,9,12,15
then I don't hit the BugSplat. I would have expected one or several of them to encounter problems.

I'll try lowering to 1000M and 512MB and see what happens.

BugSplat at 1000M cache. BugSplat at 512MB.

Seems like A VERY GOOD IDEA to reduce cache size, especially with bracketed exposures. I don't think I noticed any speed difference. I'll proceed with a setting of about 100MB.

Re: Repeatable BugSplat with 15 bracketed images

The issue is RAM fragmentation.  Sometimes rebooting cures it.

Another work-around is more memory.  You can't have enough.  And there is a shortage of RAM or soon will be, so don't count on the price going down in the next few months.

BTW, search the forum for cach size.  It doesn't really affect speed, so keep it low.

The smaller cache size seems to fix the BugSplats I was encountering on this pano, but I am getting regular BugSplats on other projects (like 22x3 bracketed pano which I'm fighting with now.)

Rebooting doesn't help. My computer has Win7-64 with 8gb of dram (bought when dram was cheap ... whew <g>).

I believe that the consensus is that you are always better off processing the backeted images before stitching. At least until such time as APP/APG introduces effective HDR/Exposure blending.

You might also ask yourself whether bracketing is really necessary/desirable for the scene you are photographing.

You can reduce the cache size but also the number of core used too. Each core needs memory and if you don't have enough RAM according to the number of CPU, this tips helps too.
