Nikkor 10.5mm fisheye / Sigma 8mm f3.5 fisheye

Hi all,

Hi Mediavets (Andrew)

Andrew, I have seen in your profile that you have also a Sigma 8mm f3.5 fisheye !
Could summarize a smal comparison between this last one and the Nikon 10.5 mm FE that you allready since a long time now!
What pushed you to buy a Sigma ?

Claude,
I thought I wanted a FE that would allow me to shoot a 360x180 with just 4-around shots for scenes with people and movement, and still produce a pano of sufficient res. for fullscreen display on-line even with my lowly 6MP Nikon D40 DSLR. The Sigma f3.5 allows this but I'm still not good at shooting this sort of pano; I haven't practised enough since getting 'side tracked' by Merlin/Papywizard.

Although I don't (yet?) have one the idea of doing this with a lightweight ring-style pano head on a monopod or a pole was, and is, also appealing.

Re: Nikkor 10.5mm fisheye / Sigma 8mm f3.5 fisheye

I'm thinking of buying nikkor 10.5 fisheye. Currently I use Tokina 11-16 2.8.
In your opinion would I benefit from this lens to the tune of $700?
Thank you for all replies

Re: Nikkor 10.5mm fisheye / Sigma 8mm f3.5 fisheye

I changed my mind about buying Nikkor 10.5 fisheye. Now I'm thinking about Samyang 8mm fisheye. Although, I have Tokina 116 already. Will my workflow benefit from this lens? Does anyone here uses this lens and can share their experiences? Thinking of getting it very soon.
Thank you!

I tested only on a Canon 5D and the Samyang was shaved:

I played with your images already. Nice job and nice lens.
My question is, if it will be better than Tokina 116 for pano images? Is it worth it for me to spend $300 vs lens I already have?
Thank you!

I think no. The biggest advantage is the quickness, you shoot 6 arround + zenit + nadir.

I think you may be mistaken?  I believe Adam is talking about his Tokina 116 WA rectilinear lens:
http://www.tokinalens.com/products/toki … odx-a.html

And not the Tokina 10-17mm zoom FE lens - which is more comparable to the Nikkor 10.5mm FE:

OH, yes Andrew I thought of the Tokina 10-17, Sorry.

For your Tokina 116:
Nadir , 4 images every 90° at -60° pitch, 8 images every 45° at 0° pitch, 4 images every 90° at +60° pitch, no zenith image required

Re: Nikkor 10.5mm fisheye / Sigma 8mm f3.5 fisheye

So, how many image I would have to do with Samyang 8mm?
Does your answer change now, as to, if I should get Samyang lens?
What's the formula for calculation number of images needed for 360x180 and 360x360 pano?
Thank you!

Andrew,
Nothing happens when I click on the link...it is loading nothing.
So, in your opinion should I plunge $300 for Samyang?
I listened to you before and got NN5L.
Thank you!

You wet my appetite with the Samyang 8mm, Adam! It produced sharp images and chromatic aberrations were in the norm. Sounds like a good deal for that price! I'll ask in another thread for opinions about it.

O.K. Andrew I'll wait for your input with my buying decision.
My biggest concern is, if I will benefit to the tune of $300 in my pano photography.
How do I determine number of images needed for given pano image?
Thank you!

Re: Nikkor 10.5mm fisheye / Sigma 8mm f3.5 fisheye

So, it's 1/2 the number of images required with samyang 8mm vs Tokina 116?
This reason in itself is worth $300?

I had a look at the specs for this lens, it looks like a really good lens for the price, I'm just a little cautious as to the build quality, but as the saying goes you pay for what you get and this applies even more so in regards to lens quality.

Does anyone here already have or had any experience of the Samyang 8mm

I tried some FE - the Nikon 10,5 is in my eyes the sharpest one providing the most resolution and less CA at 2-3 stops closed.
Better in terms of resolution is in my eyes the Nikon 16mm on fullframe.

Maybe, but it costs 3x what Samyang does. Is it really worth that much more for Nikkor 10.5?
I wouldn't mind to see a few more images taken with Samyang for pano and a final product.

That´s a question of perspective . . .
In my mind it´s preferable not to struggle with lots of CA and flares which i had with some other FEs . . .
But that´s two years ago - maybe in the meantime there are better FEs - i don´t know.

Of course you can treat CAs using DXO, Bibble, or so . . . that works somehow.
But it takes additional time - and you have to buy the app.

Remember: i´m just telling my own experiences - that´s all i can do wink
