Depth of field with longer focal length lenses

I've been 'playing' at shooting mosaics at longer focal lengths, using Merlin, Papywizard and my D40, now that I have a longer rail to handle longer focal lengths.

This shoot was a 5x5 mosaic with my kit 18-55mm kit zoom at max. zoom - equiv. of 82.5m at 35mm.

Two things standout for me - other than that my dear old mother has apparently grown another hand during the shoot:
1. The stitch is very good with no more than auto CP detection.
2. Even at this focal length the DOF is relatively shallow - compared to the FE lenses I most often use.

So my question is how do others cope with the shallow DOF when shooting panos of not-so-distant scenes with longer focal lengths?

Perhaps the answer is an obvious one - don't use longer focal lengths for such scenes unless you wish to exploit the shallower DOF?

Re: Depth of field with longer focal length lenses

You have focussed at the chair left and used, lets say, f8 ?
For a more DOF you should go to f11 or f16
It's not the best f stop for the lens but there's more DOF.
BTW are the walls curved ? what kind of projection is this ?
It should be straight I guess.
I don't know the kitlens but I doubt you needed the longer rail.
The standard Merlin rail could be enough, or ??

Re: Depth of field with longer focal length lenses

Frank,

Thanks for the tips. I am very much the beginner with DSLRs (as opposed to compact digital cameras whose small sensors always provide a greater DOF).

I was concentrating on limiting the exposure time (to control noise) and rather forgot about the aperture. roll

It is a spherical projection - do you prefer the planar projection below?

I think the standard rail was too short this lens extends the front element a lot at either end of the zoom range and my tests suggested that I need a longer rail.

Re: Depth of field with longer focal length lenses

Mediavets: as large a focal length as possible. On the other hand, lenses offer the best sharpness around 2 or 3 stops from each end, so if your lens goes from e.g. f4 to f32, f32 will give you the deepest depth of field, but the sharpest objects will be a bit sharper at f22. Of course test this with your own lens.
Secondly, focus at the hyperfocal distance.
Also some say that lenses focused at some point have twice as much depth of field behind that point as in front of it, and although that is not entirely true as explained here, you can often use it as a rough rule of thumb. So in your example you could focus on the little stool after the first couch, it seems 1/3 of the distance to the wall.

Re: Depth of field with longer focal length lenses

Funny, because I shot a pano using a tele-lens at a very smal aperture (f4) to get the smallest DOF I could obtain!

The problem is that the DOF is so small than APP can't find CP. But with the new Papywizard import plugin, Alexandre was able to stitch it (he sent me a screenshot before leaving on holidays).

I hope to show it to you as soon as the next beta is out wink

Yep !
btw for the NNP of the kitlens, just a tip.
You have a NN.
Go to the NN site and look for values of the kitlens.
Mount the camera on the NN and look at the rotatingpoint, mark your lens about that spot and mount it on the Merlin.
Like the Sigma 8mm golden ring way.
That's it.
With enough overlap the NNP is not a real issue.
Left/right is more imporatant than front/back.
grtz!

At the outset I did take a look and NN settings tables had no settings for the kit lens at Max zoom.

In fact I did just what you suggest to determine settings using my NN5 before mounting on the Merlin - sometimes even my ageing brain works.wink

Left/right is more or less perfect with my D40 body on the Merlin.

Front/back indeed seemed to be very insensitive when testing with the NN5. I settled on 120mm.

Oké then, the Merlin rail is too short.
But you have a longer rail, posted somewhere here, that hasn't the same Merlin rail size.
I found out when I was working at the wooden rail:

Your rail has some other dimensions if I can remember.
But if stitching wasn't a problem, who cares smile

Hi Frédéric!

In fact that´s a BIG aperture - with a very small DOF. As a rule of thumb you should use 11/16 - most DSLR-lenses work best using this apertures.

I tried again APG using the PapyWizard script - doesn´t work, produces just "artwork" . . cool
I hope it will work sometimes. I still use the 1.6.1-1 version. The combination of PW 1.6.1 and APP 1.4.2 works very well.
Here en example i shot today:
