I am having trouble finding images that I add in the editor. I am sure that it is trivial when you have only a few images, but I have 815 images in my most recent stitch and an added image just disappears among all the others and I can almost never find it to move it into place. There must be a way, right?

One possible method is to use the Layer editor.
Rather than describing the details of how it works, I will only say that one can put a single or many images in a layer and then unselect this layer (the corresponding image(s) disapear in the preview) or reselect it (the corresponding image(s) being visible again.)
Actually this is only one of the many ways one can use this seldom referred but very powerful tool, exploring it is a good investment (well, in French I would say "ça vaut la peine!")
