How much faster is a Mac Pro?

My latest gigapixel image (3,5 Gpix) took about 80 hours to render. After that, about half an hour for every task in Photoshop CS3. I'm still not finished.

I used a Mac Mini with a Firewire 400 scratch disc for the APP part (as my Macbook pro and Vista PC froze every time).

How much speed improvement could I expect if I upgraded to Mac Pro? I'm thinking 8 cores 2,8Ghz, 8GB ram and maybe a fast HDD. I'm hoping for big improvements in both Photoshop and APP speed.

You will see big improvements in PS if you fit the whole image + undo history in RAM. 8GB is too little for that.

Look at this thread.  It may not give you all the info you need but its a start.

also look at this thread.

This pic while smaller than yours (its only .35gpx from 161 jpg's) took 10min30 sec to detect andget to the point of rendering.  Rendering it took close to an hour to complete at 100% (40084px by 8728px)

APP doesn't make use of all 8 cores most of the time.
